switch over from column shift to console?

Any one out there ever switched their vehicle over from a column shifter to a center console shift (both for an automatic transmission)? Can it be done with a certain amount of ease? I have a '74 280c with column shift, I have a complete parts car ('72) with the center console shift which I like much better. Is this just a matter of changing out the linkage, and plugging in all the necessary parts that would be different? Or is something major required.

If nobody can confirm for you then you might be able to research to see if both have the same transmission model, if so it would indicate that the linkages are the difference and clearances should be ok, tho you may have cutting on the tunnel.

All parts interchange. The floor will have a hole already cut, with a cover plate. If both cars are W114s the link rod will have to be shortened slightly, since the bell housing of the 74 is longer. If the donor is a W115 the rod will have to be shortened even more.

As Frank says, it's all plug and play. The sheetmetal is stamped to accomodate either method, and if you have a parts car side by side with your car, it's pretty straightforward.

The instrument cluster will also need to be exchanged, at least the housing, to eliminate the shift quadrant included when using the column shift. Otherwise, easy peasy.

Same goes for the installation of a clutch pedal, the car is set up for either transmission style.

I was wondering about the instrument cluster with the gear position readout. On the parts car there is the same rectangle with just some kind of filler covering the "window". I haven't taken it out yet to look at it but I can tell it is a filler because it has slipped out of position slightly and is askew. Seemed odd that there wouldn't be a more aesthetic choice.

My stock clusters with console shifters just have a black piece of foam rubber covering the window--my refinement is to glue it in place

I did this swap on my 1973 280C. To be really correct, you have to change the steering column jacket.

For a while I had both shifters installed but with only the floor shift hooked up. I concocted a story about a rare "his 'n' hers" option and some people actually believed it.
