111 Cabriolet strip & new paint

Finally got my car back opn the road after stripping it to bare metal and painting. Had it soda blasted which I now would only recommend on a car that is just a shell. It does a nice job and doesn't harm the metal but the fine soda powder gets everywhere. All that is left now is upholstry once I get the funds. Color is black with a hint of green. It looks black unless there is a good deal of light shining on it and then you can see the green. While I had the door panels off I installed a remote locking system, just like the new cars! I also removed the non functioning front bullets lights and relocated the sideview mirror off the fender to the door and added a passenger side mirror. I was lucky, it originally being an Arizona car, the only place we had to repair rust was in both spare tire wells due to deteriorated trunk lid rubber seals.

Excellent move removing the bullets since you have the functioning Euro turn indicators. I suppose one can now eat off of the manifold just as before ?

BTW, where did you snag a RH mirror? I would really like one but am unwilling to pay $100 or more for one for my '72 108.

KPB,
I also wasn't willing to pay the big bucks for a right side mirror so I substituted with an aftermarket item which I think looks just as nice and maybe even better looking at half the price. A close up picture of my installation is on website:
http://www.msnusers.com/7aigctivt5eamiceomcrj7mr00/Documents/Pictures%2FMercedes%20sideview%20mirror%20002.jpg

They can be ordered from Valley Auto Accessories at $160 for a pair and their email address is: msvly@yahoo.com.

There is also a new factory right mirror presently 5/27 being offered for bid on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7902960659&category=10076
for $120 + $30 shipping.

Gregg

Cool Gregg. The Coupes and Cabrios have a value that the sedans never will.

Cost

Gmask,
This wasn't an Earl Shieb application so it wasn't cheap. It was done by a shop that takes a lot of pride in their quality of work and has won some car show awards for restoration. They used the finest products of undercoating, color coat and clear, with a lot of color sanding labor. Not including the extra body work required in patching the rust in the left and right spare tire wells, and removal of the bullet lights, it ran $6500. It took 3 months because they wanted to insure that the primer and each coat of poly urethane cured properly. An extra expense for me was the replacement of all the weather stripping and windshield rubber, as they removed the windshield and old door & trunk weather stripping in the painting process. Fortunately, having paid $18K many years ago, the appreciation of this unique model can recover that cost if a sale was ever considered.

Really.. not an Earl Schieb special?? Considering the initial investment in the car then $6500 sounds reasonable.

My car is sufferign from somebodies Earl Schieb Special.. I'd really like to do something about it but it'll have to wait until I do something about the suspension.
