some surprises in speakers...

Hey everyone. Well, I was taking apart the housing for the rear speakers in order to add some caps, and to my surprise when I got the cover off, I actually had a woofer and two angled tweeters! Now, is this normal for the 1432 with aktiv bass? Or did somebody add these when I wasn't looking?

That is the factory speaker system, 4 tweeters in the rear and none in the front!

the front dash speakers are capped with 3.3 microfaret caps, essentially making them tweeters.

At least thats how my car is from factory. I simply added soem tweeters glue to the bottom of the speaker grills in the front. really enhanced the sound tremendously.

its like having a 5" tweeter and a 1" small tweeter really giving it better highs.

The door subs are wired as a sub. I plan on changing out the caps to a low mid cap on mine.

My rear speakers are the same. a small woofer and two tweeters per side.

Scott... what did you do with the metal shelf on the bottom of the med kit? Did you just cut an opening in that for the sub also?

Scott,

Could you take more pix of this sub install?

I'm looking for some way to put a smallish sub in my 300SD and was thinking what you've done might be a candidate.

Would love to see some more detailed installation shots.

Good work!

Scott,

Have you tried out that "Woox" sub from Kenwood? It is a tiny, low profile unit that might fit without mods in the emergency kit compartment. I don't need to wake up the neighborhood with thumps that register greater than 2 on the richter scale and I thought this might just fit the bill.

Alon,

Er, uh, the unit of capacitance is the Farad in honor of Michael Faraday and not the ferret in last year's Budweiser commercial . (Makes you kinda lose credibility you know, and I know that you are a pretty knowledgeable guy.)

hehe sorry been havign a hellish week if you havent already read my post on my car getting crashed, water heater exploding in my basement flooding it, and the whiplash. Lifes been very mean to me in the last week.

I knew it was farad, I just mispelled it.. my mistake.

I never claim to be an expert at car audio, but I get by.

Scott, That looks great. I'll post pics of my sub install once I finish the rear deck mods to clean up its look. My sub is ina a sealed box in the trunk ported right into the first aid kit. I then cut a hole in the top and mounted a speaker grill in there.

Next step is to clean it up and make it look nice. I'm busy working on a trim ring and all to surround the carpet around the hole. should end up looking cool. And color matching the grill shouldn't be too hard.

I found and old grill at my friends shop, and I cut it and mounted it under the carpet but on top of the plastic part on the lid. It was funa nd didn't take me too long at all. Much better than the plain old hole I just had there. I did cover the port extension in the trunk with carpet to match the box, much cleaner than how I had it before.

I wish I could do it as clean as yours, but I am kind of macguyvering mine like I do the rest of my stereo stuff.

of course it's going to be a while before I can show you, my car is going to be undergoing surgery from my accident.

Alon

Sorry to hear about your bad week, just remeber they are not all that bad, thank goodness. As I said it is my wifes car and without asking her I was installing the system and being that I own a high end shop and my wife is an audio enthusiest I thought I would install a McIntosh 406 cd and changer and 6ch amp. I figured I would spoil her as I don't get around to myself and wouldn't you figure that she hated the McIntosh 406. It looked so cool in there with the wood and I had to pull it out and replace it with a sony es. It sucks to have it done and have to redo it.

sub box install

As for the sub it is a JL 10w6 in a really shallow box @ 3/4 cu ft the box is rectangular and fits up through the shelf ( yes metal was cut out to allow this) The box only hangs down about 6 inches into the trunk. I would post pics but my camera is at work. I can tomorrow night. As for the Kenwood box I have not tried it out Clarion also makes one and it might fit, it might be worth a try.
