CDC installation
Has anyone successfully installed a CD changer into a 2001 SLK 320? I want a CD changer, but I am not willing to pay the MB's price for it. Please don't refer me to the installation procedure on the SL32.com web site--it doesn't work for my car. I suspect the later model SLKs require something additional (I suspect there is some programming activity required for the head unit). So, if you have been successful, please forward specifics regarding CD changer model number and installation procedures. Thanks-

Is your car prewired for the CD changer? Yours should be using fiber optic unit.

Can't help you much as far as obtaining parts, although you could try contacting the moderator of the Audio forum here, they seem to have stuff like that for sale and apparently at a reduced price from dealer.
I can help you somewhat with directions, what do you need to know? If you expect the radio controls to operate the CD changer, the factory stuff is the way to go, or else you could install an FM modulated version. Gilly |

My car has fiber optic cables for a CD changer and telephone. My problem is that once the CD changer is installed using the factory installed fiber optic cables, it does not work (HU displays msg: "no CDC"). I've done a flashlight test on the fiber optic cables, and there is connectivity from head unit to the CD changer. Also, assuming a cable might be mislabeled at the factory, I have arranged the fiber optic cables using every possible combination--still no success. I have concluded there must be something other than cable connections that is required. But what is it?

The radio has to be reprogrammed at the dealership to reflect the addition of the CD changer. Also I assume you found the 3-wire electrical connector for the changer and plugged that in also?
I assume you checked to make sure the correct cables were selected, these typically have to be reconfigured for CD-only installations. There are 2 PAIRS of cables behind the radio and also 3 cables on each side of the trunk. The correct pair behind the radio need to be put into 1 connector, and 2 of the cables on the right rear need to be put into 1 connector for the CD Changer. Gilly |

Yes, I found the electrical connecter and did a voltage check, which indicated 12 volts to the CD changer. Apparently, I need to have the HU reprogrammed. Thanks--

If you did nothing to reconfigure the fiber optics, I'd also caution you to recheck your work because the 170 chassis, when adding just a CD changer, will almost always need some reconfiguration work. To do a quick check of the system: Partially remove the radio remove the fiber optics wire JUST from the cd changer, and have a helper turn the radio on while you watch the fiber optics in the trunk. When the radio is turned on you should see one side (I believe the red side) blink 3 times. If this is OK, reconnect the fiber optics to the changer again and shut off the radio. Remove the fiber optics from the radio. Turn the radio on, and watch the fiber connector that was connected to the radio. One of the fiber optics lines will now also blink 3 times, the light source is from the changer itself. On the one in the trunk, the light source is from the radio. The system is attempting to establish ring lock, but can't because in both cases a connector is removed. It tries 3 times, then gives up. If one of these isn't correct, you should fix this problem before having the radio programmed. Gilly |
