Hello all...I tried a search of the archives, but didn't find anything that applied...so here goes.
The AM radio reception in my 99 300 diesel has become a problem. When stopped with the engine off, reception appears normal. When I insert key, about three seconds later, I hear a whistle and static, even if I don't turn the key. Turning key to on, without starting, noise is worse, with engine on, noise is also bad. I see no sign that static/noise changes with engine RPM or that activating any particular electrical accessory changes things. I do note that if I am closer to source of station, problem is less notable. FM seems fine as does Weather Band. Not sure if this is enough to identify any obvious type of issue, but I would sincerely appreciate any input. Thanks a lot, Tony ![]()

Check to make sure the connections are tight at the antenna amplifier, this is located behind the left interior sail panel. Just a slightly loose coax connection can lead to complaints like this.
Has the rear window ever been replaced? Gilly |

It's also called the C pillar. It's the piece of trim between the rear window and the left rear door. The antenna amp is behind that trim panel (inside the car. remember the rear window is where the antenna is).

I kinda thought that is what you were talking about. I had never heard it called a sail panel though

I am having a similar problem with reception in my '98 E300D. It seems when I am on open highway, I have a good signal. When I get in the city and around a lot of trees - I start losing signal. Also, when I have good signal and park it stays good. I think it is the antenna amp or the connections.
What is the best way to remove the sail panel? I don't want to break it or the connectors. I travel for a living and don't have a garage. I usually take the car with me. So, I'll be doing this in a hotel parking lot. Thanks! Richard |
