Question 722.3 or 722.4 transmission difference?

Does anyone know what the differences are? Do all Cali cars have the 722.4 or just the later years like say 1985? Are the gear ratios different? Torque converters lock up at different rpms?

I was looking through the Performance Products catalog and I noticed that it lists the 722.3 trans as Federal and the 722.4 as Cali. But no mention of what years. It also lists different modulators for both transmissions.

I have a 1982 Cali and 1984 Federal 300TD.

AFAIK, the '85 CA model has a transmission all of its own. It has a kickdown solenoid that is activated by the EGR computer.

722.4 is a smaller case tranny than the 722.3.

A car like an '87 300DT would have a 722.3, but the 2.5 Turbo would have a 722.4.

Got a nice transmission history sheet here in one of my books. On transmission history it says:
W4A-020 722.4 Application: Used in 4 cylinder models, 1985 Calif. turbo diesel, 1987 2.6 liter and 601, 602 diesels.

Both of your diesels I believe would be the 722.3

OK. the Performance Parts catalog is a little vague. It did not list years, just Fed and Cali models. Since my 82 is Cali I assumed 722.4

I'm assuming only the 85+ Cali has the 722.4 and all earlier California cars have the 722.3 Federal type transmission....

Is this a correct assumtion? Where on the trans can I find a number ot identification tag? Just to be sure. I suspect it may a modified Cali/Fed car at this point in it's life.

I'm just starting to learn about these cars but I think it's going to be a long term love affair.

If I remember correctly, 1984 was the first year for the 722.4.
If you suspect things may have been changed, look for the numbers stamped into the transmission itself, on the right side (passengers side) of the case itself, just above the oil pan line, like above the oil pan gasket, may need to clean it up, there'll be a bunch ov numbers, look for the "722.whatever", will be either a 3 or a 4 behind the decimal.
