Vacuum Line 1981 300D MB Help-Help I accidently pulled the green/yellow vacuum loose in the drivers compartment. I can't seem to see where it hooks up. I think that it is the vac. line for the air conditioner. The diagram shows a check valve with one line going to the air conditioner controls and the other to a storage tank. I don't have much hair on my head when I started but I have a lot less trying to stand on my head and find where the vacuum line connects. Any help would be appreciated....I am at my wits end. My wife keeps yelling that I should get rid of the car but I am always amazed at the Engineering in this old car. thanks paul ellis

ignition switch vacuum valve questions

Can anyone here elaborate on what the vacuum valve on the ignition switch of a 300D actually does?

There are two hard brown lines going to your ignition switch. When the switch is turned to the off position it allows a vacuum to pass to the top line which activates the shut off valve on the pump.

ignition switch vacuum valve

Recently, my 300DT ignition switch stopped turning to the "start" position. It turns to the "accessory" position and the "on" position, but not the "start" position. I removed the ignition switch for inspection, found nothing wrong and replaced it. The ignition switch still would not turn to the start position and I needed to move the car to my house (the ignition switch failed away from home). So...I started it using a little trick I learned of right here :-) I turned the ignition switch to the "on" position and crossed the #1 and #3 terminals of the block on the right front inner fender. I moved the car to my house, but discovered that now it wouldn't shut off using the key. I had to stop it by depressing the "stop" lever on the injector pump.

Does anyone know if the vacuum valve on the ignition switch could have prevented the key from turning to the "on" position?

Thanks,

Tony

Could be the tumbler and/or steering lock assembly failing.

valve glow stater switch

if you were to look at the ignition assembly, you will see the two vaccum hoses, brown and blue brown that are used to shut the engine off. this little assembly is the valve glow stater switch, etc.

Hey, these diagrams are good info. Can you provide links to any diagrams specific for a 1980 300CD. Mine has developed a couple bugs that I can't put my finger on.
Symptom: engine cut off fails intermittently. When the key is turned off, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. An oddity discovered is that if you open the driver's door for about 10 seconds or so before you turn off the key, it works fine every time. If you turn off the key before the door is opened and it fails to shut off, opening the door will usually cause it to shut off before you can get out. How is opening the driver's door connected to the engine cut off operation??
Also could use diagrams showing the layout of the vacuum system that operates the A/C controls in the dash and the center vent flap system as well as the vacuum bleed and modulator system for the transmission. Mine is the earlier four bolt pan tranny used in the late 70s and early 80, phased out in the 1980 model year.
