1977 240D Climate Control Question

Maybe someone can answer this.

First the situation. I'm working on a 1977 240D manual trans, manual Climate Control (AC has twist knob like the blower). I've tested the CC reservoir and it's holding pressure, however the Climate Control circuit (green/yellow line) doesen't hold a vacuum when the AC is off. When I turn the AC on it has a slow but significant leak.

The Question: What diaphrams/vecuum element controls should this system have? Since it is not ACC there should be less of a snake pit, but this far I can only guess that it has the following:

1) AC vacuum control switch
2) Circulating Air Flap Element
3) Legroom Flap Lever & Defroster Nozzle

Any Input?

I would REALLY like to know where the vaccum diagram for the 1985 california emissions came from.
I have two engine manuals and neither has that much detail / thoroughness as that diagram.

Hello all. I am so happy to have found this forum. I have a 1981 240 D with auto transmission, has the wheel for the AC..and I'm not sure if I have power door locks or not...lol. Anyway...I thought I was gonna need a new tranny untill I read these posts. Now I am convinced that it is a vacuum problem. Whoever had this car before me has 1 of the lines under the hood plugged with a golf tee, I have 2 black lines running in thru the firewall...1 i guess just goes to nowhere...the other...who knows? The 2 lines hooked to the ignition are in the right place i think. 2 yellow lines are under the carpet...maybe to the door locks? Can anyone help me to decipher this maze of vacuum lines?

More Door Lock Questions

I have a 1980 240D. I went on a three week vacation and left the Mercedes unlocked in the garage. When I returned, I could not lock or unlock the car with the key. I also could not press the manual door latches down. All seemed rigid in the up/unlocked position. I have never had any problems with the vacuum locking system in the past. Does anyone have an answer to this one?

Thanks in advance.

Re: More Door Lock Questions

I was driving the car today and out of curiosity, tried the manual door lock and for some reason, everything worked. I can't explain it but am not complaining. I also learned something I will pass on. I recently had a new ignition switch installed. I got a tumbler that was encoded by Mercedes for my specific car. I was warned that the metal in the Mercedes key is soft so it does not act like a saw everytime it is used in the lock but the aftermarket "extra" keys are very hard metal and will wear out the tumble and should only be used in an emergency. I did notice small brass filings around my ignition switch and that sure answers that one.

Hen's tooth 85 W123 49 State With a California Vacuum System

When I got my 85 W123 a couple of years ago we were trying to sort out many things that were neglected, improperly hooked up, and broken. One of the things which needed attention was the mal functioning vacuum system.

Since my car was built 10/31/84, we get a trick or treat now and again when we go at it. This time it was how the vacuum system was routed. It had more hoses and connections than an 85 - 49 state set up, but didn't have the trap oxidizer and the air cleaner cannister next to the radiator. Instead it had a California vacuum system with a 49 state (it came from Texas) air cleaner and no trap ox.

I suppose usually that the 49 state cars had the 49 state set-up, but not my Hen's tooth... So when you check out the 85 vacuum diagrams, compare the bits and pieces from the diagram to what is actually on your car to make sure you have the right diagram for your car... In my case it was a California vacuum diagram and very different from a 49 state set up. Oh yeah, the car works great in spite of being weird.

vacuum Question

I have a 85 300SD (220000 miles) I rebuild the vacuum transducer (the blue thing) . It was hissing at me. After I found out a new one would cost nolm$ 125 at dealership ,I tour apart the old one and it had a bad O-ring . I replaced it put back together and seems to be working fine. I notice that the vacuum converter is also hissing (vacuum leak) . The thing the egr line goes to is also hissing like it is looseing vacuum . My Question is. Is it normal for it to make noise or is the hissing from the vacuum converter my problem.

The FSM CD (about US$20 IIRC) contains descriptions of various parts but no single diagram for everything.

MAAAAAAaaaannnn,,, thank you so much, i am having the worst cold start problem
shot wd40 in the intake of my 1982 300 D, and it starts, runs rough as heck for about 3 or 4 minutes, then smooths out when it warms up.

Got to scraching my scalp hard, and then figured it was a Vacuum leak.

I used the lift pump to get the air out of the cigar line sumerged in a jar of diesel fuel
still hard cold start,,, actually, no start, until i added wd40 in the intake.

Got it started, let it run half an hour, turned it off, turned it back on and it starts right up.

Let it cool down an hour and NO START! bummed me out.

Today i ran it out on the hiway, brought it back, running good.
shut it down, tested the start again, started right up no problem

Hour later, no START

Got to be Vacuum,,, right guys?

It excelerates fine when warmed up, lots of power

yet, for the first 5 minuets after start up, i have to have my foot slightly on the pedal to keep it running, cause it sounds like it is missing and idles real rough.

This diagram you booted up Phantom should help me find the leak i hope

I also hope it s NOT under the dash,,, i got a creaky back, and stooping down uder there ain't all that advisable for that ancient spine of mine.

Thanks again Phantom

anybody have suggestions on this?

Roger

You're thinking of a gasser. A diesel doesn't care about a vacuum leak.

You're problem is likely more than one bad glow plug. If you've never tested for them, Diesel Giant has a good pictorial.
