Long time no post! My poor 240D had been down for quite a while now because I have a stuck or chipped valve on the 3rd cylinder & next to 0 compression. I'm finally planning on removing the head this weekend & I just wanted to see if you guys have any suggestions/helpful hints for doing this?? I've got the Haynes manual that tells how to do it, is this good enough? Anything to look out for?
Thanks!!

Ok,, you do know that at skinnerbox Dot something... the entire manual is on pdf ?
Haynes has better pictures of some procedures.... but skips too many of the warnings about how to do stuff... that the MB FSM does have.... |

If you can find an actual Paper 616,non turbo 617 manual... they are better than the 617 turbo manuals.... they are more thorough and have better pictures...
Glad you found it... |

Don't let the chain drop
Use some wire to keep the chain up tight and in mesh with the sprockets and mark the chain to the cam sprocet.

Well, it went pretty smoothly yesterday until I tried to actually pull the head off. It was stuck on there really well & I don't have an engine craine so I wasn't able to remove it. I was hoping it would come loose so I could lift it or have my dad help me, but no luck. I'm working on finding one now. The only other thing I didn't have was the reverse 12 point sockets for the head bolts. I thought for sure I would have a hard time finding them, but I walked right to them at Autozone!
Thanks for everyone's help & suggestions!

Well, last weekend I got everything taken off but couldn't get the head off, so I left it while I looked for a crane or some other way of pulling it. I looked at it again tonight & noticed 4, I think, recessed hex bolts or something. These are flush with the head or slightly recessed. The first one, closest to the front, is smaller than the rear three. They are located on the right side between the valves. the heads are pretty large in diameter, so I'm not even sure they are bolts. Does anyone know if I need to remove these to get it off? They aren't on the diagrams that I could see, but I still couldn't get it off, so I'm just wondering?
Thanks!

As best as I can read the 616 manual... yes, those four bolts are ' head ' bolts... 8m compared to the ' Real' 12m head bolts... when untorqueing the head or putting it back on they are not considered in the ' tightening order' but I do believe they go through the head to the block...
The manual says to remove them using " 440 mm long/6mm key wrench" whatever that is... |

A 4ft pry bar and be substituted for the "440mm long/6mm key wrench". Just stick it in there and pop her loose. Don't worry about the timing chain it will slide right off once the cam gear is bent. Sadly enough I have heard about a gentlemen that was stupid enought to do that on his BMW.
