85 300SD with brake problem

A co-worker who has an '85 300SD asked me if I could help him. He tells me when he brakes, the pedal feels kind of soft for a moment, then goes down a little way then feels normal. Also it tends to pull to one side. I'm thinking he may have a sticking caliper on the side it pulls on. The car may have ABS so I'm not sure what to think. I haven't had a chance to test drive it to see for myself but I have a feeling he's describing it correctly since he does have some mechanical knowledge.
What do you think it could be?
