Question about A/C.... PICTURE

Hi.

THE CAR: 1985 190D 5spd 159k

For some odd reason the A/C is hard to turn off in the car. I can turn the fan off but I still feel really cold air coming a few minutes after I have shut the thing off. I went under the hood and all the A/C lines were frozen, meaning that the A/C has been running.

I am not an A/C expert so I am inquiring the GODS of this forum. While the engine was on I looked at the A/C pulley (i think that's what it is) and notied that only the pulley with the groves was spinning while the front of the pulley was hesitant and only moved a millimeter clockwise and then counterclock wise (it just basically sat in one spot). I have posted a pic of what spins and what doesn't...... Can the A/C be seized ? It does work and it is very cold but it seems to be on when I turn it off.

What do you guys think about the pulley ?

Thanks again and here is the pic.

Turning off the fan does not turn off the a/c system. The part of the compressor farthest forward turns the compressor. There is a clutch that engages that connects the belt driven pulley to the front plate thus turning the compressor.

The compressor must be good or you would not have cold lines and cold air. To turn off the a/c you need to press the button with the O on it.

With no more info than you wrote here, it sounds like the only thing wrong is that you are not operating the system correctly. Do you have the owners manual?

Good luck,

Holy CRAP!!!! You are absolutely right. I have been driving with the A/C on since I got the car
I do have the manual and I'm probably going to read it since I just made myself look like an a-hole.

Today as I was driving I got scared since the A/C was off (to my knowledge, which it wasn't) and I notied smoke coming in through the vents. I paniced and thought it was exhaust smoke while it was just the cold air.

Thanks again

Actually you should just leave the system on all the time year around. Put it in automatic mode and the fan in automatic mode. Then just adjust the temp dial SLIGHTLY when needed. Don't put the temp dial in the MAX or MIN setting. This is an automatic climate control system so take advantage of it.

Have a great day,
