Some people gas up their diesel.

The words "Engine" and "Motor" have different meanings, at least to purists. Do the Germans also make such a distinction, or do they call anything that produces motion a "Motor"?

On a Caterpillar it's a decelerator. When it's floored the engine is at an idle when it's up she's wide open with lots of smoke!

"Motor" typically refers to an electric device, unless you're from where I came from, in which case it means a two wheeled machine (like a Harley Davidson).

"Engine" is the proper terminology here in this forum. However, there is a noteworthy exception in that you may preface the word "motor" with "Oel", and you'll be ok with the purists here.

PS - Them's more big words that I've used in a long time...

Terms

Diesel and Old are both incorrect -- it's a fuel pedal. We strive to use the proper terms because that's the difference between speaking one's language and speaking "glop", as I used to say to my sons (insufferable pedant that I am .... or aspire to be). The most horrible term in current American is "whatever", meaning "I don't care if I use the right words or not".

proper name is important because it helps newbies like me identify parts in the car. I keep reading about this thing called "vacuum POD". so i goto FastLane and try to look for a vacuum pod. no luck...took me a couple day to figured out that vacuum pod is actually called Vacuum unit or vacuum element. please people..proper name is very important in referece to mechanical parts..

Actually, the acellerator pedal in my 300SD came out of a 380SEC, so it was a "gas pedal" for most of its life.

I was just wondering if the Germans have a word for "engine" or do they just use "motor."
