Woo Hoo I got my A/C tools today...

Woo Hoo I got my A/C tools today...now I can start to put to practice all the reading I have done using search the last few months....

Got my manifold guages...my side tapper , thermometer, Automotive specific A/C book, I have a vacuum pump.....If I need a dye injector I will farm that out...I assume I can insert the oil while hoses are disconnected and not need the special tool...got to crack down and take the test in the next few days...

I intend on rebuilding hoses...new O rings and expansion valve..new a/c receiver and flush the system well. And go with a R12 charge...when the '83 300D is fixed I am going to put the W116 back to factory R12...

I doubt I will get through all of this without asking some other questions...

"and flush the system well with a R12 charge..."

Really bad idea... but as soon as you start studying for your test you will figure that out...

Both oil and solvent flushes are available... which I think is good due to the viscosity... to take out particles which might need to leave your system.
Then , if you want to, use Nitrogen to flush the solvent out...
All the latter are both cheaper, better, AND LEGAL to do compared to what you mentioned first....

Greg, you need to understand "Bonehead speak".

I'll translate for you:

"and flush the system well, prior to charging with R12".

OK, now?

pesky punctuation, or lack of...

Well, I hope he meant that... but the other has happened in the past....and used to be that R11 was specified as a flush agent...

He's punctuation challenged, but not mechanically challenged, you know.

misquote.......my bad....Brian had it right with what I meant to write....I've been studiying the A/C related archives here too long to make that mistake.

Damn guages I understood to be set up for R-12 and have R-134 adapters....turns out the hoses had the generic male ends the R-134 adapters screwed on to....so now I still need the R-12 adapters...as both my cars still have the R-12 fittings... so off to the auto parts store on my way home tomorrow to see if they have them..

Dear Mr. Bonehead,

If you'd be so kind as to lend me your soon-to-be-found expertise and help me fix the AC on the 1997 C230, I'd be forever grateful. In addition, in your honor, I'd grill up a steak dinner, serve the alcohol of your choosing, and provide appropriate, if currently contraband, smoking material.

Hot and hopeful in DC,

I am far from being an A/C expert..trust me on that...I've been studying up hard and heavy on it but this will be my first practical application of that...I've been wrenching most of my life by compairison...

... well, before I put in the meat order, simply because it's the right and just thing to do, I figured we'd evaluate your skills on your fleet first.

Seriously, good luck with your project!

Let us know when you've got an Arctic breeze blowing.
