My 84 is making me think of a change

My A/C has finally died. The diagnosis is the evaporator. When the
A/C broke on my 190DT I did'nt really have any money in the car and was able to look at the project as purchasing the car.

Everything works ok on the car but with 100 degree temps I'm really tempted to send it North where it could find a happy home in cooler weather.

I was looking forward to painting the car next year, but this will put if off awhile if keep the car.

It's usually 4 x 75 or so.

The noise is just too much if you have to drive more than 25 miles, IMHO.

Somebody obviously doesn't live in Texas. Such a novel concept as driving with the windows down, does not happen here. It's like sticking your face in a blast furnace.

Try driving in a driving rain with temps in the 90's. The window's fogged up I could barely see.

Rderton,

How did you determine it was the evaprator?

It might be the connection at the expansion valve. Check that before U try to replace the evaprator.

1.5 x 80

I drove my old 450SEL all around the Gulf Coast with a dead climate servo one summer. The trick is to open the driver's window all the way and the rear DS about halfway - plenty of airflow without nearly as much noise and buffeting. At least it was a wet heat.

I know we're not the only state that has ridiculously hot weather, but you simply can't drive during the day without AC. You can physically survive, as this is the point where cooler climate folks usually talk about how they haven't had AC in 5 years blah, blah, blah.... But you end up sweating through your clothes, smelling like Fido's arse, and watering your leather or MB-Tex.
The '85 is parked, as AC is inop.
PEH has a good suggestion. Check into it.

I lived in OKC for 2 years and never used my ac in the benz. But then again, I almost never ran the air in the house either. Although I grew up in Iowa, I don't mind the hot.

I concurr! I do this all the time as my 9inch long curly hair tends to go crazy with no rear window exit

I knew there would be posts like this (no offense Habanero). Heat is survivable, but you can't do it without sweating and stinking........

Well, on the way to work it is/was cool, so no extra sweat there. After work, I'm out in the un-air conditioned garage (or garden) working anyway. Guess you guys afraid of sweating have never done much outside work. One thing growing up on a farm teaches you, I guess.

I elect not to use AC because in my part of Florida it's hot and humid most of the year, and in the summer you pretty much just start sweating as soon as you step out the door.

The power it drains from initial pickup and the loss of fuel efficiency also turns me against AC, so I don't see a lack of AC as a reason to rid oneself of an otherwise good car.

Anyways, in a few years I bet they won't even make cars with AC because fuel supplies will be so limited and the new means of competition between manufacturers will be gas mileage rather than power/luxury.

We'll all be best off with our diesels because we can convert them to WVO (and then no-one will kill us for our fuel either like in Mad Max because their cars won't be able to run on WVO ).
