First let me say that you guys ROCK! I am surprised at the responses and all the help i've immediatly gotten. THank you all very much.
the engine cranks and turns over. I also poured oil into the engine between cranks..... it smokes after cranking?!! I don't know if the glow plug is good or not. I will replace that along with the fuel injection lines tommorrow |

fuel pump
I don't know if it technically a fuel pump.... the little module thing connected to the hand primer just looks much cleaner and newer than the rest of the vehicle.... I degreased and pressure washed the enging and that little piece has a really shiny tag on it.

two fuel pumps
Ok we have two fuel pumps if you want to be technical
First is the lift pump at the back of the IP, which lifts the fuel from the tank to the filters Second, is the IP or injection pump, which times and pressurizes the fuel going to the injecters

Try loosening the nuts on the injectors (17mm) and crank until you get fuel leaking from them. Then tighten them and try to start it.

Glow Plugs
Will only take you about 60 seconds to check to see if your grow plugs are good, no need to replace just yet... unplug the glow plugs at the relay timer and check your ohms..should be 1.2 thru 2.0 ohms for each glow plug.

Okay,
Do not buy the fuel return line, no biggy. Does the glow plug light flash after you try to start it? If it does you have a glow plug out. Even if it does not you still may have a glow plug out. Is the car a stick shift? If it is turn the key to glow the plugs and have some one give you a shove or pull and at about 20 mph gently let the clutch out in 2nd gear. If it starts, keep the idle steady but low and allow it to run for a minute. Check to see if the oil pressure comes up immediately. If it clanks, bangs and moans let it run for a few minutes and it might stop. Go ahead and shut it off if you think it will blow up. By the way, if it won't shut off with the key, press the stop lever, part of the throttle linkage, on the valve cover gasket. If that does not work, because someone monkeyed with the linkage, dump the clutch or put your right had on the dip stick to hold it down and put your left thumb over the opening of the breather hose coming out the top of the valve cover and that will kill the engine. By the way when doing that, count and see how long it takes, thats a good indication on the non turbo engines on how good the compression and leak down are. Good luck and happy towing! Ryan

Glow Plugs
You don't have to use anything but a circuit tester on the glow plugs in this year.
Hook the clip to the positive batter terminal and touch the glow plug, be careful not to touch anything that could ground it like the engine or metal injection lines and if it lights up its good, if not its out. Pretty simple huh? The other method of checking the glow plubs by ohms it for 1979 and later. Good Luck

If the starter is in good working order, you do not need to push start the car.
If the glow plugs aren't working...fix them then start the car with the starter. Push starting is just not an option for the average person (with short driveways and public roads). Safter to work on the driveway...espically if the engine has problems. or CLUTCH! has problems. |

Pull Starting
Depending on your location, make the correct choice whether or not to pull start. However, non turbo diesel Mercedes, older and warn, tend to never start again if they have considerable wear and have sat for an extended period of time such as this one. If you can't start it normally, pulling it is your only option. I have had over 100 different diesel Mercedes, sometimes they need to be "pulled" back to life.
Do not put a dime into this car until you get it started and it runs out okay.
