2007 last year of the volkswagon tdi in north america?

Thats what a dealer quoted me when we were looking for a new one last week. Said they will not be available for two years. Have nothing to back this up. Just thought it was too bad if true. No ulterior motive that I can think of for him to mention it. He knows we have owned them for years. He threw this out when I asked him if they were going to continue the present body style for about four more years with the tdi. Style is not particularily to my liking others of course will feel differently.

I'm an avid reader of AutoWeek, MotorTrend, Automobile, and Car/Driver and not once have I read about VW pulling the TDI from America.

I'd have a hard time believing it for two reasons - 1) they sell every TDI that comes here for full sticker and 2) every other manufacturer has stated that they'll start bringing diesels in 2008/09 (BMW, Lexus, Toy, Merc).

But then again, manufacturers do some goofy stuff for reasons that have nothing to do with logic.

For much the same reasons I agree with you. Also notice even renault is introducing one here. But since that dealer sells about 90 percent diesels I could not figure out why he would say that. So posted it with no substantiation. Again too bad if true. But why just for two years?

What i've seen is that VW will pull the tdi for 2007 for emmisions reasons, and bring out a new tdi for 2008. This is just going to make tdi prices go sky high. I sort of would like to get one, however many of 2001-2003 are going for near there sticker prices. I think the A3 Jettas and B4 Passats can be picked up for around $5000.

I pretty sure they are doing it for emissionss reasons. They probably need to redesign the engine.

I doubt redesign, just re-equip with current Euro engine that is set up for low sulfer diesel. 2006 regs are kicking in now and hopefully soon all of our diesel with go from 500 PPM sulfer to <50 PPM sulfer as it is in Europe. The good in this is that it will open our country to all the excellent, high tech diesels they run in Europe - I would assume the good stuff from Honda and Toyota as well. The emmisions will be better and the 5 states that currently prohibit diesel sales will then allow them.

Who knows, maybe a diesel revolution will hi the US

The used inventory at dealers has picked up a litttle lately. Saw a 2000 with about 42k miles and two years bumper to bumper or 40k volkswagon warranty a few days ago for about 8 thousand american. Clean, Clean, Clean. The only but important downside was it had an automatic. Lots of 2001-2003s on lot but higher milage most with about 120 K miles and up. Prices were down a little as well over the last two year average. The jetta diesel market price seems to be breaking a little. Still trying to find anyone that has dealt with their general customer service centre that has been treated well or happy. Your satisfaction is too much left to your dealers individual attitude it seems.

They did it with the 2004 Toureg TDI. There was no 2005-2006 model year because of emissions.

No reason they can't do it with the smaller cars.

VW is going away from the PD engines from what I have read at tdiclub.com. It looks like they are going back the the pre-PD engines.

What's wrong with the PD engines? I still don't like the timing belt, but they are otherwise good engines.

I talked with one of the VW engineers and as I recall they will bring in the cars for 2007 but that may not be so since the execs can decide as they wish. The B5 certification is helping.

They also have quotas due to emissions and therefore they can only bring in a percentage of diesels to gas cars due to government regulations.

All the VW's have timing belts....and it makes em a lot quieter. Are they planning to go back to common rail instead of the Pumpe Duse injection?

There are no diesel powered VW to be sold in NAmerica in 2007. The reason is super-simple: they don't meet Tier II emissions.
