Seat Troubles

I have searched through some seat posts and I cannot find the same thing that I have yet. Here is the problem:
The passenger seat will go forward but not backward and will tilt forward but not backward.
The seat is in not that great of shape but I would still like to fix it. It is in a 1983 300sd. It is also electric by way of the switches on the side door handle.

Thanks

Douglas Kabat

By the way, the tilt I mean tilting the back rest of the seat. The whole seat tilt will tilt up and back. Thanks again.

There are two thing that are probably going on
1) You probably need to clean the switch contacts. There are a lot of write ups about this.
This is the best write up that I have seen. It may be a different car but they use the same switch.
www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/seatcontrols.htm

2) The wires from the switch to the seat break at the door hing. I had to splice in new sections of wire at this point on my drivers side.

Thanks,
I will give it a try. I hate taking apart the door but it looks like it will be coming off once again. I don't think it is the door hindge but it could be... I will look. Thanks.

SSUUUWWEEEETTTT!
Thanks so much. I thought that I would be putting a lot of work into fixing the problem such as getting new switches, etc. Well, it worked, and much thanks to you. You saved me as the seat needed to be put back by tonight. Great!!!

Thanks again.

DK

What finally worked? On mine I had to splice the wires on one door and clean the switch on the other. Cleaning the switch is easy but using dielectric grease to hold things in place while you put it back together really helps. I'm afraid I've had get inside the doors on my car so many times that I can do it in under ten minutes now.

So far every switch that I have check on my car has been built the same way and if you have cleaned the seat switch you have done the hardest one so any time you have an elec. problem start with the switch. For some reason these switches tend to build up carbon and it woen't make good contact with that. The best thing that I have found to clean the contacts is a pencil eraser.
