190d 2.5 Turbo Transmission

New to the forum and need help... I have a 1987 190d 2.5 turbo that won't shift into high gear. I can drive it in '3' position, but if I start off in 'D' it goes through two gears and then when it shifts to high it's like neutral... the engine just races.
I tried a can of 'Trans X' to no avail. Currently I am replacing the filter on the off chance that might help, but I'm beginning to think it may need more some serious work or even a replacement transmission.
The trans is a 722.413 model. Can anyone tell me what I need to look for in a used transmission? Will any of the 722. model transmissions fit, or will I need to find that specific number? Thanks for help or advice. Steve.

new filter and 'TransX'

Well, I got the transmission filter changed. Everything looked pretty clean inside. I added another can of Trans X when I filled it, and I noticed something different when I started driving it around... Now, when it's supposed to go into high gear I can feel a small bump or thump sort of sensation. I thought 'that's almost like it's shifting gears or something'. The engine still races if I mash down on the gas, but I tried giving it light throttle and then backing off several times and noticed that the car definitely tries to move forward in high gear now. So I guess I can say now that high gear is slipping rather than just non- existant. Not sure how much of an improvement that is...
Is there some way to adjust the bands on this trans (or would that even help)? Or am I back to looking for another Transmission?

Did you buy the car like this, did this happen gradually over time, or was it a "one day it is fine, the next it is not"?
If you bought it like that, did it come from Durango Motors?

Durango Motors

Yes, Durango Motors... I bought the car on Ebay.
Sounds like you must have some knowledge of this particular car. Small World. Anything you could tell me will be appreciated. Thanks.

It used to be 2nd and 4th. You will certainly need a tranny. The've known this for quite awhile, so I hope they were up front in their auction.
I loved the car, and for the right price would have been all over it. Back when I drove it it shifted from first to third. You had to let off for the first to third, then keep it in S so it wouldn't try for 4th.
Interior was nice, suspension felt great. Paint is leaving, but presentable.
Best year/model 190d I believe. You're just gonna need a tranny or a rebuild. Be careful of a used tranny, as these seem to always go at some point, much sooner than the 123 and 126 trannies.
Care to give a link to your auction, so I could read their ad?
Good luck and enjoy the car. After a tranny of course.......

They were obviously not truthful or forthcoming in their auction. No mention of paint, and misleading on the tranny. I still think you will have a great and unique MB when you're done. I really liked that car.
You local to the DFW area?

Still Love the Car

Jimmy, I checked the previous posts you cited... Lots of good stuff. Wish I'd found that when I was searching the posts before.
Yep, same car. first and third gear, no second and slipping in fourth. I drove up from San Antonio (300mi) with my nephew in my old 300SD and drove the 190 back in third gear at 55mph (about 3000rpm) No problems on the trip, and the fuel economy was 31mpg on the 190d in third gear. Curiously, I got 31mpg on the old 300d on the drive up at 65 to 70 mph with the AC on all the way, and driving back tes 300 got the same 31mpg following the little blue car at 55mph all night with the AC off. Seems to prove the old 300d has a 'sweet spot' for fuel economy at about 65mph. It was funny to pull into the truck stop in Austin and tank up both cars after 184 miles... They were both full to the brim with 5.9 gallons each.
Yes, Durango Motors was dishonest in their listing. They only said that it 'shifted hard' into second gear. I probably wouldn't have bid on it if I had known the truth. But once I got there, I managed to get the price down considerably below my ebay bid. Not enough knocked off the price to pay for the trans rebuild or replacement, but hey... I was expecting some trouble with it anyway, and I've been wanting one of the turbo 190d's for some time. Aside from the trans problems, it's a pretty good example of a fairly rare car. I'm sure I'll get many years of enjoyment from it.
AAR... CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHERE TO LOOK FOR REBUILD PARTS FOR THE 722.413, OR WHAT USED TRANSMISSION TO LOOK FOR? I can't just drive it in third gear forever. Thanks again for the response.

vacuum

Not having much vacuum could certainly be your problem with hard shifting. Since Diesels don't have manifold vacuum, they have a seperate pump to provide vacuum for all the systems. If your power brakes are working, your pump is probably just fine and you just need to check for leaks or make adjustments to get your shifting back in shape.
Unfortunately, vacuum is not my problem. One of the first things I did was disconnect the vacuum modulator to see if I could force it to shift... It didn't help. Most likely I'll have to replace the clutch packs (unless I can find a good used trans).

Vacuum?

TallMan... Like you, I'm new here, but I just found a wealth of information about troubleshooting trans vacuum problems available in the forums. Just keep looking and you're likely to find info specific to your problem. Also thought I'd mention that there are troubleshooting / diagnostic books for your transmission available in the 'buy parts' section for about 15 bucks. A useful reference to keep if it has specs and procedures. Best of luck with your 190td... I'll bet you'll have it shifting well in no time.
