Does your diesel need a diaper?

123 Chassis Diesel Signature Diaper Kit

It's not for sale yet. Just though I'd pass along something interesting.

LOL, I though that was a joke. If it leaks, fix it. That thing looks like it would make changing the oil a real PITA.

I could have used one of those until about a month ago. Finally took care of the oil leaks by replacing the front crank seal, vacuum pump gasket, IP-to-engine gasket, air filter oil drain tube o-ring and oil filter housing gaskets. Also replaced the oil cooler lines before they decided to leak.

Front crank seal

I am buying an '84 300 TD that has an oil leak. How involved is it to replace the front crank seal?

It's not terribly difficult. You need to remove the fan and radiator. The biggest aggravations are getting the crankshaft seal ring off the crank and getting the balancing disk lined up properly when reinstalling. There is plenty of guidance available if you do a search. Inattention or impatience can result in a damaged crankshaft. So I would do the job when I was not under a time constraint.

My front tras seal leaks about .25 liter per 4000 miles. To me that is not enought to worry about.

Well, you would still be able to change the oil via a Topsider fluid extractor. The MB dealers have been using them for about 30 years.

Yes, it sounds like a line from the 1960s Aussie song, "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor (on the bedpost overnight)."

I know, but I still trust gravity, myself.

For what this probably costs, you could probably just pay someone a few $100 to chase down and fix all the leaks. Besides, it sounds like you are supposed to remove it and periodically replace the absorbent pad anyway. BTW, what happens in a heavy rain, does this pad get saturated with water?

Looks like it would make certain front end repairs a pain too.

Actually, I think it's a fairly decent idea. I've toyed with the idea of making one for a few years now, although I've always pictured it as being clipped onto the bolted on crossmember below the rear main. give the guy credit for executing a possibly decent solution to a real problem. I used to park well away from friend's houses/driveways before I rebuilt my engine because of the leaking from the rear main - and fixing that is a bit more than a few hours work, I've done it.

I wish I would have put something like that on my car. My concrete driveway looks HORRIBLE even after pressure washing it and various types of cleaners. The worst thing is where my car leaked vegetable oil, I have no idea how to get that stuff off, it's literally bulletproof.
