idle question
when driving ur benz (models with manuel idle) where should you put your idle when driving? i usually have mine at quarter a way from full, and i noticed today that if i move it to halfway the car shifts way better (big difference) so my question is, where should it be????

The manual idle is to allow a higher idle when started in very cold climates. Once engines warms, you turn it back down. In the winter here (45 to 50 degrees) I turn mine up prior to starting engine then 4 or 5 blocks down the street I turn it fully down. 10 months out of the year I never touch it.

I'm surprised it would have any affect on shifting. The idle control on my 240D doesn't seen to make any difference once it's off the idle stop. How high does it idle with it turned up?

yeah when it's turned all the way up, it shifts hard, but when I turn it down, it shifts wayyy easier
so should the idle be turned all the way down, except for in cold weather?

I keep mine almost all the way down in warm weather to give a reasonable idle speed (around 6 or 700 rpm). In the winter, I will just turn it up enough to make sure it doesn't stall when it's cold. I'll usually turn it up a little when it first starts, then turn it back down when it warms up and I notice it's idling too fast at a stop light. I've never felt any difference in shifting.

idle adjustment
I always turn the idle up for a cold start. Turn it down halfway after the engine warms. Yes, I think for me it does affect shifting, primarily first to second as the revs hang and I'm more likely to get a little grind from the syncro. I often wonder how my car shifted when it was new. I think I have the original clutch. Voluminous repair receipts from previous owner and no mention of clutch work. Only thing I have done is replace the clutch master cylinder. I'm reluctant to let any one else drive my car because to drive it smoothly requires some care and attention. My 190D manual is silky smooth compared to my 240D.

With an automatic, it would change the throttle angle i.e. move the rods to a different pivot point which would affect 1st to 2nd. Again, I only turn my idle up when outside temp is cold. and my engine is cold, rest of the time completely off. If I change a fuel filter I turn it up prior to starting to speed up the air purging.
