Standard Trans for 83 240 D

Does anyone out there have the transmission and parts to convert a 83 240D to a 4 or 5 speed standard? My automatic went down on me today and I would rather put the money into a standard conversion than have the automatic rebuilt. The problem with the auto is it will shift into second very hard after the engine comes up to almost redline, but won't shift any higher. I'm thinking a possible intermediate piston has either seized or shattered or it could also be a broken band. I really would rather go with a standard though. Thanks for anyone's help in locating the parts for me.

Check with Benz Friendz, I bought a manual tranny there last year, of course you need all of the associated parts but they can help.

You might try checking all of the vacuum lines and fittings from the transmission all the way up through the 3way valve and to the IP. If all looks good, check the vacuum to the transmission with a mityvac while opening and closing the throttle. It should go from high to low as you increase the throttle. If all is good, I know from experience that a transmission vacuum modulator failure can cause the transmission to delay its shift to redline or beyond. The modulator is adjustable to change the shift timing. Your tranny might have shelled out, but don't give up on it yet. Oh yea, did you check to see that there is enough fluid? Good luck.

What apache said!

Also you might have a bad Injection Pump vacuum valve. My daughters car (83 240D) would not go past 2nd. Replaced the unit and all is well

Well I got it repaired. It was a broken vacuum line. Now it runs great and shifts nicely. That's great.....I think. Now I can't get the wife to agree to a 5-speed conversion. Well maybe later.

A 5-speed conversion will probably cost double or more than a 4-speed. The 5'er is so insanely rare in the USA and costs so much to ship across the pond, it's not very cost effective just to get a few hundred RPM lower highway speeds.

I've only seen one 5-speed in person and it was in a pristine 280CE that I wouldn't have the heart to take apart.

I have a complete 4 spd set up from a 240d including clutch, flywheel, pedals, master and slave cylinders that I might consider selling if anyone is interested in it. I thought I might want a manual so I removed it from a junkyard car, but I've decided I prefer the automatic.
