Just bought a 190D -- few questions

Just bought an '84 190D auto with 198k. PO bought it with a bad headgasket (overheated) replaced the headgasket, water pump, radiator, etc. so all that is good to go now. Paid $1500 for it.

I'm not new to MB diesels, but I am new to the "2nd gen" diesels (OM60x) and the newer chassis (w201). Any good things to search for on the forum? Kinda strapped for time at the moment, so will be doing some good forum surfing later on, but I have a few quickies at the moment.

--What mileage should I expect out of it? I've gotten 31mpg out of it at 70-80mph.
--How big is the fuel tank? The fuel gauge doesn't work so would like to know when I need to fill up!!

--The transmission leaks from the rear of the tranny (not 100% sure, haven't had time to get under the car yet). The odd thing is that it leaks mostly when the car is off. I will know in the morning if it leaks while driving. What could cause that, and is it a common thing?
--The transmission is regulated by a cable and vacuum right? Cable controls when to shift, vacuum controls firmness? Yay/nay? It shifts like crap at the moment...

I'll post pictures when I'm back at my house later next week... hopefully this tranny issue doesn't get any worse!!

Thanks!!

if i remember correctly, they have a small 14gal tank.

31mpg's at that speeds sounds pretty damn good for that speed. But the slower the speed the better the mpg.

If the car is leaking tranny fluid and it shifts like crap then your low on tranny fluid. My suggestion would be to take it to a trans shop and have them look at it. My dads 78 300D trans was leaking and caused it to shift like crap, when we would top it off with new ATF it would shift good and soft.

Eventually my dad took it to a trans shop and they rebuilt it.

190D mileage

Congratulations on the 190D. Your mileage seems a little low on the highway but it just may be the speed you are cruising at along with the automatic transmission. I can do an easy 40mpg or more with a 5 speed at 70mph.

I used to have a 190D much like yours. I had an 84 2.2l auto. I owned it for 30k and never got under 30mpg even in a Minnesota winter with 15inch snow tires. I think my best tank was around 38mpg.

The difference between a TDI manual and a TDI auto is about 5 mpg, so yeah it's probably the same for the older 190.

I would say yes on the vacuum controlling your firmness of shifts.I own 2 ,84 190d 2.2 ,and an 88 190d 2.5 .The 84 has a vac pump out, shifts hard .The 88 has no vac probs and shifts fine. The 88 2.5 turbo is what Im now interested in,but a rare car to find with low mileage. My 84 300d turbo is a great car ,rides like silk and can spin the turbo when needing to pass, but the nimbelness of the 190 makes it a true champ of a car.The 84 year, I believe ,came with 14 in. rims .Im now looking for 15 s at the junkyard ,they look really nice and I believe finish the cars looks.
