no
there are lots of reasons, but the most obvious one is the different gearing on a gasser transmission compared to a diesel.

It will be a 5spd behind the 2.2 diesel ,what gearing are you talking about?A motor transplant of the 2.2 diesel into a 2.6 gasser 5 spd.The donor car has a blown 2.6 motor in it.The rearend ,is that the issue?

there would be wiring harness issues. i dont know how hard this would be to deal with. the fuel lines may be different too, i don't know from experience. i have experience with 123 chassis cars. i would also be concerned about the age difference between the two cars. in engine swaps i try to use the same year chassis if possible due to interface problems primarily with electrical accessories.
i would think that if you start with two complete cars you would be able to change it all over. if you hired a shop to do this i would give a WAG that a competent indy would charge around 1,750 to 2,250 for labor. is it worth it? that only you can answer. but i suspect money wise you would be money ahead to just fix the gasser by installing a good used engine. if you provide more info perhaps we can offer better comments. tom w

I guess you could tear apart the transmission and change the ratios, might as well while you're transplanting all the engine-related electrical stuff into the gasser. And all the fuel related stuff.

i would be surprised if the trannies are different between gas and diesel. the rear end will be different though.
the only different tranny was the one in the 16v. it was a close ratio with a 1 to 1 final vs the normal .80 or so overdrive ratio. it also was a totally differnt tranny, a getrag, i believe. with a different shift pattern even. tom w

I always apply what I know about VWs, which seems to burn me more often than help me in terms of wrenching on the MB. My MB is the first front engine/rear wheel drive car I've ever had.

The possibles ,probables, and plausables have been answered now is it in my budget for this to happen,I dont like projects that gather dust so I usually dive in and geter done once I start.Hope this rules out any been their done that kind of response ,thats why you guys are champs when it comes to second guessing an oppurtunity .The 2.2 has rust and a leaking sunroof hasnt helped the interior any.Warped door panels and a boat like smell gives this car a pass over when its asked "lets take your car".The yes catagory are their, the purchase is cheap ,if it dosnt work out Ive got a very good parts car and could sell the 5 spd.I dont think I could lose. thanks
