Getrag Transmission

Hello guys,

Just wondering, what is a getrag transmission? I've been told it was mated with a 110 engine.... Will this fit a w123 chassis and match a OM617 engine NA.

Thanks for the advice!

Juan

It's just a brand name like Allison. I believe that the 5 speeds that are so rare were made by them.

Getrags fit both the OM60X and OM61X engines; the 60X version gearbox has a starter wart on the left side of the bellhousing, the 61X version has a wart on the right.

The Getrag 4-speed and 5-speed gearboxs have an alloy case with an integrated bellhousing. The older MBZ 4-speed (and 5-speed) has a cast-iron case with a separate alloy bell housing.

Getrag 4-speed for the OM61X engine application:

Getrag 5-speed in foreground; cast-iron, MBZ 4-speed tranny in background - both OM61X application:

Thanks for the advice guys! I asked about the transmission because I found this item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=160070494514&rd=1

Will this fits a 617 for sure?

I already have the factory 4-speed attached to the 617, so I could use that flywheel and clutch compound.

I've seen pictures of the old 5-speed before but, I don't believe they're a Getrag...isn't that an older MBZ tranny? The side case looks exactly like those on the cast-iron, slope top box.

Can't tell. But, his comment about it fitting a 60X engine is waaay off. No bellhousing made for that. I'd hold out for a Getrag from a Euro 123.

Maybe from a W116 V8? Check the Russian EPC. The only thing I saw with a number starting with 117 was for a 350SE.

No it wont. Says starter is on drivers side. 617 starter is on pass side

Get clarification, the tranny in pic has bellhousing on Pass side.

Also don't forget that you will have to get the drive shaft shortened and I hear its hard to find a shop willing to touch MB ds.

I found this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=112692&highlight=manual+transmission+603

to be useful for finding the right manual for a 603. In any case, the seller updated the side the starter wart is on (passenger side now), but he didn't update his description to say it'll fit a 617 rather than a 60x (which it clearly will not).

FYI:
5-speed Getrag from a 2.3 16v (note Getrag name between shift arms and posn of starter wart))

Similar Getrag that will fit 616-617-110 engines (note posn of starter wart).

Ancient 5-speed (missing bellhousing) found in 114/115 and 116 chassis manuals:

OK, a cursory look in the Russian EPC shows the flat-topped, cast iron 5-speed tranny available in the 280 (W114, M110). If that ebay tranny is depicted correctly, tit should fit onto the back of an OM 616 or 617.

anyone know the gear ratios in this thing? How sweet would this be in a 300D non-turbo?

the gear ratios are very similar to the four speed with direct fourth and an overdrive of about .82.

if you need exact ratios i can get them for you.
