Both myself and others rent them in the tool rental forum.
As you know, getting it into and out of Canada might be problematic. |

If it were workable for both parties, I could loan use of my garage in the Tacoma, WA area as a place to work on said car. It's not TOO far from Vancouver, BC, but it is a bit of a drive.
For that matter, I'm not adverse to finally making a trip up into BC, but haven't had the chance yet. I would think that either route would avoid the CA-US shipping bit.

Do you need to compress the spring to replace the guide rod?
I thought I installed my simply by unbolting and prying the lower control arm forward, and then back. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I don't remember compressing the spring.

You need to move the spring perch out of the way in order to get the bolt out of the control arm bushing. (This is good, it keeps this bolt from falling out if the nut ever comes off). I replaced mine with a generic spring compressor that I rented from a parts store. I had to jerry rig it and I could not actually remove the spring though (it held it compressed, in place so I could drop the control arm down). Not the best way to go, but it did the job and was fairly safe.

I just replaced a guide rod and yes, you do have to compress the spring. I used a cheapo compressor (not necessarily recommended) but it can be done. You don't have to remove the spring, just compress it enough to unbolt the spring plate so you can get that guide rod bolt out.
