Is the 300SD usually a little sluggish?

I drove a 82 300SD today... it was nearly perfect, two owner, spotless, and well maintained. EVERYTHING worked.

But when I drove it, I thought it was a little sluggish. The only thing I have to compare it to is my 81 300TD Turbo, which to me is a little more peppy, but I would think they should be similar. I was suprised by how much different it was. It was so much quieter inside.

Also, it seemed like I could feel a vibration in the accelerator pedal with my foot at highway speeds... What would be the normal RPMs in that car at highway speeds?

Also, do all MBs have stiff shifts...? the only thing I am used to is american cars which you can't even feel and then my 300TD which is all wacky with the flaring and the jolting hard shifts.

Can you SD folks give a little insight? I am looking into getting one in general, and I would like to know what else to look for.

mine is quite peppy, you may have issues with boost sense and or throttle linkage. also, you could have problems with fuel filters.
search for why is my sd so fast, under my name.

Mine is pretty peppy also. Boost input to the alda and/or leaking alda could be an issue.

That vibration you feel in the accerator pedal could point to several things.....motor mounts, valves, or injectors.

One other scenario is it may just have been sitting too long.

My 82 SD has a better hole shot than my 84 TDT. It also is much quieter and the tranny shifts like butter. But 65k miles on the SD; 190k on the TDT.

how good would the SD have to be for a person to ask $7k?

I mean, on the outside, it is almost perfect -- perfect like, the black underside coat was even still shiney, the jack holes were still coated, and all the rubber on the car was still soft and shiney -- like a new car -- but I was surprised by the lack of performance. At highway speeds, it didn't just say "yes" when I would try to pass someone. It has almost 200k miles on it, and it hasn't been sitting that long from what I know.

Making an offer is tempting, but I just wasn't sure about the ride. I think 7k is almost impossible to justify unless I don't have to touch a thing on it for 3-4 years, like with a new car.

We got back, I got back in my rusty, bouncy, bad shifting TD and I began to appreciate it a little more.

Hard shifts and lack of power could be relatively easy fixes. Cosmetically, the car may be really great. That doesn't mean it's been well maintained under the hood. For $7k, I would definitely want service records and you should have it thoroughly checked out by a good Benz mechanic. Even if everything checks out, $7k is a little steep for an '82 with 200k.

For slow starts you may just need to clean the banjo. A valve adjustment wouldn't hurt either. My pedal vibrates at high speed, too. I know I need motor mounts, so that could be it. Hard shifts are probably due to a vacuum leak. Search around this site. You can plug a few lines to take care of it.

Not sure about your inability to pass on the highway. You may want to have the turbo checked out.

As others have mentioned, Fuel filters on these car really can make a big difference. Also, if the car has been sitting for a while, no telling what's going on in the tank. I'll never forget bringing back the "Limo" from Florida before I changed the fuel filters. Sluggish was an understatement.

Alda, banjo cleaning, and boost controller is what you need to get the motor back to life. These are all free or very cheap fixes. I put in a boost gauge and saw I was only getting 7 psi. I upped this to 12-13 psi and it feels like a new engine. The ALDA was a good fix but only helps you at very low speeds.

Believe it or not, here is what NADA quotes:http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1982&m=1115&d=4211&c=12&vi=76711&z=76107&da=-1

And if your description is true, that is not far from the retail price. It would need to be immaculate (not show quality) for that price. The interior condition would be one of the highest prioritys for such asking. However, I don't think the performance is extremely serious, as in possibly inexpensive, and shouldn't be the determining factor.
