Question 123 heater fan blows fuses

Hi all,

I have an '81 300TD originally from Europe. I've owned it about 10 years. It has been sitting for a while (thru a wet winter)and I am now getting it back on the road. The heater/ defroster fan will not work (it did last fall). It blows fuses of all strengths immediately. I tried an automatic reset circuit breaker and that made no difference either.

Other than siezing of the electrical motor, any suggestions ?

Thanks for any help.

Our '83 240D did that years ago. I pulled the blower motor out and cleaned and lubricated the bearings. It's been so long ago I can't be any more specific. That cured my fuse blowing problem. The motor just had too much drag.

Hi all,

This afternoon I pulled the blower motor and found it was stuck.
I broke it free by hand, and applied good penetrating oil to the base where a friction point is visible. I'm letting it sit overnite before I try it again.

Should the blower motor be very 'loose and freewheeling', or should you still expect that it only turns when you turn it , has some resistance ?

Thanks.

blower motor drag??

The motor should not have any amount of "drag". It has a certain amount of inertia due to the armature, bearings, and fan but it should turn freely. If it still seems tight try to get some lubricant into the bearings, that's where the drag is really coming from, unless you hear some scraping when you turn the fan. In that case something is bent out of position and is causing the drag.

I'll bet you have the same problem I did, motor seized and stuck! Remove it and lube your bearings really well a nd put it back in. there will be a slight amount of drag but only very slight because the motor brushes are making contact with the armature if operating correctly. This should stop you from blowing fuses other than having a shorted/closed circuit somewhere. If you can get the motor to turn after lubricating it, try connecting it directly to your battery and see if it turns. Hang onto it because if it does, it will start with a lot of torque and you don't want to drop it on the squirrel cage assembly and break it. If it runs fine and you are still blowing fuses, you have a shorted connection somewhere and it takes time to trace it down. hopefully being stuck is your problem! Good Luck!

Thanks for all the tips !

I let the blower motor sit overnight with penetrating oil around the base and bearings. Today it turned much easier, I tried some electricity and it worked.

It's all together again now and humming away !

How many amps should it draw-- connected directly to a 12 volt battery?
