Rough idle with A/C on

My 1984 300SD has a rough idle with the air conditioning on. The valves have been set and the a/c works (blows cold). Any ideas on how to remedy this? Thanks for the input.

It may be that you idle is just a tad low. I have the same issue with mine and if I just rest my foot on the pedal enough to raise the idle 100 rpm or so it smooths out. Eventually I will get around to adjusting the idle a bit but for now this method works ok.

I recently had a problem with my car doing the same thing - my alternator had a missing bolt holding it in place, and for some reason only "shook" the car with the ac on.

Mine had the same problem. The idle was set around 750 and when the compressor kicked on it would drag the idle down enough to cause some wicked shakes. I raised the idle to about 800, I'd say, and now it feels the same whether the compressor is on or off. You can't even really tell when the compressor kicks on.

I can't find a socket deep enought to allow me to loosen the locking nut to even adjust the idle. I have the same issue when the A/C compressor engages.

Look for a 1/2 inch drive socket, they are usually deep enough and you can fit a screwdriver through the opening to adjust the screw.

That is what I have, but the sloted part is up so high that the socket will not seat on the locking nut.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize that anybody replied until today. I guess this forum doesn't send an email out to advise you. My fault I didn't check.
