Motor mounts...???

I was thinking about the power steering belt rubbing a hole in my upper oil cooler hose. Obviously this shouldn't be. I did notice for the last couple of months that when I shut her down she shakes a bit. New motor mounts needed? How hard are they to replace?

I just noticed the DIY article. I will be using that as a tool and taking some pics to add. Is it difficult or tight? Just want to get an idea of time involved.

Thanks

They're easy, but messy if your engine is grimey. If the 85 mount is anything like the 86/87 mounts, you will be wanting to get an 8mm allen head socket and a big cheater bar to break loose the bolts that go in from the bottom. Tons of threads on this. If you read up and have everything anticipated, it might take you 2 hours for both sides. A floor jack is really helpful too.

How can I tell if it is the mount or the shock that is bad?

oil cooler line

You might have a more pressing matter, replacing the oil cooler line. A weak line can destroy an engine in seconds.

A floor jack is required, not sure how you can replace the mounts without supporting the engine (jack, or engine lift).
Hard to tell about the need to replace shocks until you pull them, but you can see most of the condition of the rubber engine mounts, as well as the upper shock mounts. The shock mounts are a separate item and are not included when you buy an engine shock. The engine is supported in three locations, so while you are looking, inspect the transmission (or rear engine) mount as well. This can contribute to a shaky engine.

These are what the mounts should look like. They are probably squashed down by now causing some clearance problems between various hydraulic lines.

I know what the mounts look like. I haven't really taken a good look to see the shock yet. I was just wondering if I should spend the money and buy everything.

The line was spraying oil all over the place but the fan made it look worse. I kept a decent eye on the oil pressure and it didn't fall real low. I only lost about 2-3 qt total and I stopped once in the meantime and added a qt.

Mounts are cheap. You'll notice an improvement in engine height and smoothness just replacing them.

To check the engine shocks pull them out and they should should be stiff just like normal shocks. If you can pull the shock in and out with no resistance then they are shot. Also make sure you remove the nut on the top of the engine shock or you will either destroy the shock or the shock mount or both. Then you will need a new one.

That was not true for me. My engine developed a bad shake after I installed a new engine mount.

Smile Diesel giant motor mount DVD

Hello All,

Diesel Giant has an instructional DVD for motor mount replacement. It was very helpful to me when I replaced both of my motor mounts. I went ahead and replaced the engine shocks while I had the engine raised.

It's an easy job once you figure out how to hold on to the shock rod.

New shake

The 'new' shakes most likely were always there. When you stiffened up all of your mounting, the shake became apparent, indicating another problem. For me, the shaking got bad after I replaced the rear mount. The mount itself was destroyed (See pictures in post #7 http://www.mercedesshop.=153575 ) This eventually to a new driveshaft. Ouch. Should have left the bad mount in place, as ignorance was smooth.

Engine Shock Mount

Hi,

First post here and this is a great site!!

I just got my first Mercedes Benz, an 84 300D and I love it. I'm more experienced with VW, and I thought I'd try a Mercedes.

Anyway, I too had a bad oil cooler line, (previous owner just clamped a rubber hose) which I used dieselgiant.com as a reference (http://dieselgiant.com/oilcoolerlinereplacementl.htm). Since I was under there, I'm replacing both motor mounts and engine shocks. I purchased some bushings, and me being me, I forgot to note how the bushings came together. I checked another post, http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=193512 and the way my engine shock bolts to the top, I can't seem to fit any bushings in it. Please help.

Thanks!

BTW, sorry no pics, I'm at work, but as soon as I get home, I will post a pic of the bushings I have and the mount location.

The engine shocks have to be lossened from the under the car. The shocks screw into the shock mount.

It takes a 10mm allen to loosen the lower mount bolt, 6mm for the two on top. Also make really really sure the allen bolts are clean inside, or else you will round out bolt head. Also for the bottom ones, use a 3lb sledge to "impact" them with either a 10 mm allen socket or wrench. Makes removal much easier and ensures the allen socket is fully seated. You need to "bounce" the breaker bar. Steady pressure can either round out the allen head, or break the bolt. I had the rounding off experience. Took a Snap-On extractor to remove it.
