sit all day, engine still warm

I don't know what value this is, but with all the talk about temps and starting without glowing, I though this observation was mildly amusing...

When I went to start my car to go home the other day, I noticed that the temp gauge was already above the 40C mark (maybe up around 45-50C?) whereas normally it indicates below 40C. It wasn't particularly hot that day, but the car had sat all day pointed into the sun over asphalt.

Since yesterday was predicted to be the hotest day of our summer, I came prepared.. I took my camera to work and took a picture of the temp gauge before starting the car. This time my car was parked in full shade. The ambient temp was 102F, so the gauge didn't indicate as hot as last time. Incidently, 102F = 38C, so I now know my temp gauge is accurate at the low end

Just thought this was a mildly amusing observation.

Remember radiant heat will reflect off the pavement and heatsoak the underside of the car.

As part of diagnosing hot engine problems over the last couple weeks, I happened to leave a couple of laboratory thermometers on the dash in the sun the other day.

They read 70 C when I got in the car. Yikes!

Indeed, which is why my engine was hotter the frist (cooler) day than yesterday.

Interestingly, it also applies even when moving, not just when parked. As I drove home last night the temp stayed at a nice constant 90C on flat ground for the first 30 minutes of my drive, and then crept up toward 100C when I got on some fresh, very black, asphalt, even through I was still moving 40 MPH. All that absorbed and reflected heat had to be adding to the engine temps.

Hot and Hotter...

I always notice a drop of 5 to 10 degrees F during my drive out of the city into the countryside. The "heat island" effect has been well documented, it even affects the weather -- downwind of big cities there is more rain (I think that was the conclusion -- it's been awhile). It's always nice to get actual data from people in various places.

You have indeed had some warm days lately in the Specific Northwest. I trust it will cool down a bit before I arrive in Portland, tomorrow evening (Thursday 12th).

My parents used to stick me in the car when I'd act up. Kids these days have it EASY.

There is def a heat bubble in Atlanta. Probably the largest land locked city in the US. Certainly the largest land locked with the worst traffic. 10deg change is nominal. The good part is that it causes most of the heavy weather to avoid us.
