You don't like this person, and that person doesn't like the other person, and some personalities grate on other personalities. That's life. I wish you all would drop it or move it to OD folks. Frankly I believe lots of us don't care to hear this in the DD, and it has very little to do with helping people understand or care for a MB diesel.

Hillarious,

"Wondering if you have service records that show how often the oil was changed, etc."

" The oil was never changed"

To me that would be 'Click" end of conversation lol.

First the second part of that quote...
Ask me how much I've spend so far on my car (and note the price in the sig), then ask how much more I have to go

As to the first part of that quote:
Whether or not Forced spammed 240Joe's inbox is immaterial. If there was a car, and *if it still ran*, it wouldn't have much life left in it.

In a nutshell 240Joe claimed there was no need to change oil in a 240D when using high end synthetic oil. Several of us disagreed (some more forcefully than others), and a couple members, myself included, figured the following: Want to ruin your car? That's your business. But if we pay for the involved costs could we learn something in the process? Specifically we were going to pay on our dime for oil analysis of 240Joe's 240D's oil to see how well it held up under those rather harsh conditions. I thought it would have been an awesome experiment to see just how far you could push the limits, even if you willing to destroy things in the process. Alas 240Joe left while calling names and stuff and never returned.

So to summarize:
Assuming we weren't getting our collective leg pulled (in which case that was the best troll ever), and that car saw no oil changes for a year, with the 60 mile a day commute, the engine doesn't really stand a chance. Your cheap daily driver would have left you on the road stranded with a spun bearing in short order.

Best wishes, and hang out here long enough you will get a lead on a decent deal

It would appear I crafted this lovely response to a banned account. I am brilliant 'taint I?

Blast from the past! I almost remember typing that one.

It's not a banned account today. Alive and kicking.

First-class troll is right, whether or not the car in question actually exists.

I thought Joe actually made sense, if I recall, he would either burn or leak enough oil that he was constantly adding oil... why change it if the supply is getting renewed so often.

Why even let it leak that much and pollute the environment with raw oil when you can fix it?

If the engine is in decent condition, you shouldn't be burning/leaking more than a quart or two every 3000miles. Replacing 1/8th the oil in that amount of time likely won't make up for the increased soot levels and stressed oil.

Thats what the PO's did on my VW. The little 4 banger only holds 4 quarts and it was leaking out two of those a week. Constant oil change!

I used to lose about 1qt per 2000 miles....ever since I replaced my oil pan and gasket its been not even half that much! That pan will pay for itself in a year!

I just added about 1/4 of a quart tonight to top it off, for the first time since I did my oil change (which was when I changed the pan and gasket)....over 2,100 miles and 2 months ago....amazing reduction in oil loss. Anything it loses now is probably from blowby. Almost nothing on the ground now either. Just a little from the air cleaner because the return tube is gone...so it just drips on the ground. If I ever pull the engine I'll replace that....otherwise...oh well.

A 240D running nearly constantly at 80 to 85 mph will use about 1 quart in 600 to 1000 miles. If you don't believe me, look it up.

Say you drive 12kmiles a year or 1kmile a month, and add a quart a month...and the engine holds 8 quarts. Say that soot is added to the oil at about 0.15% per 1000 miles...which has been confirmed by many oil samples.

It can be shown with a little math (and I'll leave that for an exercise) that the concentration of soot can never get higher than .15/.125 or 1.2%.

If soot is added at .2% per 1000 miles, which is very high, then you'll never get above .2/.125 or 1.6%.

A good synthetic diesel grade oil can easily handle 5% soot...and some 10%.

And now you can do the math for other combinations....say adding oil only once every 2 months or 2kmiles. Even with the .2% soot added every 1kmiles, you can't get over 3.2% soot....ever.

So, to sum up....if you have to add at least a little oil to the engine, and you change the filter once a year (this analysis excludes the oil you lose when you pull the filter out...but it would only make the numbers better), you can probably drive it forever.

Fire away.

I wonder how many 240's can run at 85mph constantly....you're near the redline there! Not to mention thats 15-20 over the speed limit in all US States....

Also, MB says to change the oil. So do it. Somehow I can guarantee the engineers that designed the car and engine know more than you. A whole lot more. And they say to change it, thus, probably a wise idea.
