W123 manual console shift rebuild...help
Need help please-
I removed and rebuilt the manual console shift mechanism on my 83 240D. I am now unsure if the shifting linkage is reassembled in the right order and also unsure how to reconnect to the transmission linkage correctly. I am working from an old parts schematic from M-B that is sketchy. Does anyone have a more detailed diagram of the console shift tines as well as which lever on the transmission corresponds to which gear. It will save me an embarassing tow to my shop. |

There are (3) "alignment" holes in the linkage at neutral. Look Under the car where the rods connect to the vertical arms coming down from the shifter. holes are in these arms, insert pin, nail, bolt, what ever. All shift arms on tranny should be in the "middle" of neutral. Dont know if any of that helped but at least you'l know where n is spoz too be.

Are you talking about assembling/reassembling all of the many "keys" that go on the shifter shaft that bolt on top of your drive tunnel? The otherwise-maligned Haynes manual has a great diagram of that. You might also look at the EPC which usually also does a good job of showing assemblies.

Thank you for replies-both help-any thoughts on the order of the shift linkage. i.e.-which levers on the transmission correspond to which gears?

Forward arm is 3rd & 4th, its the rod nearest the drive shaft
middle is reverse and its the outboard arm of the shifter which leaves 1st and 2nd and its the middle rod on the shifter.
