Isn't it ironic, you so much as mention any 350SD or 350SDL and you see an immediate negative response, rod bender, worst diesel engine ever made by Mercedes, Mercedes loses class action lawsuit, response, and here we are with a couple 500,000 mile vehicles! I just think it ironic, if not funny that the most maligned engine in Mercedes Benz history has two of them making it to 500,000 mile mark.
CONGRATULATIONS! This is reassuring news although my car seldom experiences the problems discussed on the forum. Obviously, maintenance is the key and accepting that mechanical parts do have a lifecycle. I acquired my car from an auction neglected and barely running at 200,000 miles. It took some work and some investment to bring it back to life but now at 246,000 miles I have been more than repaid and the car continues to run strong. Incidentally, if your car is black/black, I'm told there was only a few hundred brought into the country with that combo in 90-91.

Congrats, truly an achievement. I'm shooting for it in Alex, but have a long ways to go.

Cost of ownership ...

Congrats!!!

Would love to know, though I'm sure it would be darn near impossible to figure out, what you paid per mile on this fine MB ...

And folks are buying Toyota Prii?

I don't think any of those engines were better than the 3.5. But folks expect a lot more out of a mercedes, and should.

My uncle bought a new 5.7 and had a broken crank at 12k miles. My favorite machinist had a 5.7 that broke a piston at 80k. The fuel injection pumps seldom went past 70k miles on those or the 6.2s. It was possible after a few years to upgrade and make a lot of that better.

Just my $.02.

What lawsuit did they lose?

Haven't a clue if there ever was a Class Action Lawsuit filed, won , lost settled out of court, who knows? Just thought I'd mention the three big things that always come up on this forum, or any other Mercedes forum for that matter, anytime the 350 diesel engine is mentioned. Do a search, put in 350SD or rod bender or class action lawsuit, it's a universal cross reference for all three. Put any one of the above three and the other two show up. I really have no idea if all the people who appear to have this information on the 350 diesel engine have actually owned one, know someone who did own one, or are just repeating what they have read. I guess I should have just kept my mouth shut. Like I stated the first time, I'm not disputing anything anyone has ever said about the infamous 350 diesel engine. Just thought I'd let dproudfo know he wasn't alone with a 350SD with 500,00 miles.

Oh, OK, I just had not heard of a lawsuit over it.
