If you do use the sensor method. Try to get the advance reading at say three thousand rpm. We have never discussed the normal advance on these engines or know what it is. I have always wondered if the mechanical advance units springs change tension with age.
I dropped an email to the famous mercedes engine rebuilder a year or so ago asking them if they reconditioned the mechanical advance mechanisim with each total rebuild or at least checked it with no responce forthcoming. When checking the timing on older gas mercedes it was verified at about three thousand as a standard timing approach on those cars. It is actually fairly easy to read at thiose rpms.. Will your unit fire properly at that speed I wonder. |

From the threads I have read people believe or hope that they can buy on clamp it on and set the timing, when in fact the have to set the timing by some other method first in order to "Calibrate" their unit to the Engine they are presently working on. This means that the Pulse Timer is not going to be more accurate that what ever method you used to "Calibrate" it. If you put your unit on a different Engine Model or a different make of Engine you need to start over again. A Pulse Timer is great if you have more then one of the same Vehicle or are doing a lot of timing in a Shop where you work. But, for someone like myself with one Car that needs to be timed it would be more of a expensive gadget that would not get used often.
