'77 240D replacing water pump questions>>
After searching I see conflicting views.
1) Does the radiator need to be removed? 2) This job seems fairly easy--anyone with experience of this job care to comment? Any major snags I will hit along the way? I am helping a neighbor who is retired and on a very limited income, so you could say it's pro bono... I just don't want to make anything worse for her. Thx, -GH

Just did this job on mine. You don't need to remove the radiator. You DO need a magnetic pickup tool for the fan coupling bolts (for removal AND reinstalling). Ask me how I know...

Update, I did this water pump and it was extremely easy! I removed 4 bolts for the fan and another 5 for the water pump.
I did remove the radiator so I could have more room and the coolant was old anyway. A very do it yourself friendly job. The only bad part about this is now I have to have a diesel. I fell in love with this old car!! -GH

I'm getting ready to do mine...it'll be the first major mechanical repair I'll have done myself. The belts and the tensioners intimidate me somewhat, I don't know if I need special tools to deal with that or not.
I also appreciate any pointers anyone has to give.

All I needed was 10mm and 13mm sockets and a ratchet with extensions. Also 10mm wrenches.
You should have only 1 belt to worry about and this belt falls into your hand when the bell housing for the fan is removed by hand wiggling it back and fourth. Make sure you have a new gasket and use a bit of the blue silicone sealer for $1 in a one time use pouch @ your local auto parts store. Let it set up for about an hour before you start it the car after installation. I also replaced her thermostat at the same time because I couldn't initially get the heater to work right after I changed the water pump. With the new Tstat, the heat hot warm quickly. The '77 I worked on didn't have a tensioner for the water pump belt. I assume yours is similar? PM me if you need help... It's an easy car to work on and a simple job... -GH
