Bah.. I am different lol.

Here is why I removed it. I learned to drive without a mirror on that side since my first car came without one. I have my main rear view mirror aimed to spot the right side since I use my left side rear view mirror to watch those blind spots. The glass on my old mirror is total crap, it has black spots all over it and nothing will remove them as well as the heavy scratches.

In other cars I have driven with a passenger side mirror I would aim it to it viewed to the left of the rear quarter panel and up into the other lane. This mirror wouldn't adjust to there. frankly, I've never used that mirror, always the main one and checked my blind spots.
I didn't like how it aimed and to my understanding the passenger side mirror is a weak point in these cars, other than the horrible "sun visors" that don't block the sun at all.

I can tell you this, when ever I change lanes I always look over and check my blind spots .

I'm going to keep my mirror in case I feel like getting new convex glass for it and w/e.

I will agree it does look lopsided.. and it is weird. But at least I can play it off as "weird german engineering" since I put the correct block off plate.

the block off plate.

classic. Screw Symmetry....

Only one of my 4 W123s have come with a passenger mirror,

TheDon 05-25-2008 11:27 PM

I was taught to drive without the mirror and I Find that the w123 doesn't have that many blind spots. Eagleco's roadster has... no blind spots.. lol

Plus I am trying some aeromods out and alot of the guys delete the external mirror for more of a streamlined body. But they do add convex mirrors on the inside of the car that do work very well. I'll be picking one up soon as I can find the right one.

now you've got me all worried I'm going to die without the mirror.

Why in gods name would you remove the pass mirror? Put it back man thats just awful.

ForcedInduction 05-25-2008 11:59 PM

Mine came without a passenger mirror and I don't miss it at all. If I want to change lanes, I'll use a bit of energy and turn my head to look over there.

The only time I dearly missed having one was when I parallel parked on the left side of a one-way street. I quickly learned not to do that again. :D

I like having one on the right but I actually seldom use it.

I suspect it might be worth a half mile per gallon though. And a mile per hour top speed.;)

I'll keep driving with it off this week and think about putting it back on and try the adjusting thing.

I can tell you this. If I do aeromods, the hood star stays.. I don't care if it would save me 20 mpg by removing it, it stays!

winmutt 05-26-2008 12:11 AM

I too rarely use it but when some jackhole cuts you off it makes the difference between a new front end and a safer quick lane change.

TheDon 05-26-2008 12:15 AM

the glass is really messed up on the old mirror, I can barely see any thing in it... I tried to remove the mirror glass from a junk yard car but I didn't know how to... Its probably easy as pie.

bgkast 05-26-2008 12:36 AM

I think it just pops off a ball joint inside the housing

TheDon 05-26-2008 12:39 AM

I didn't want to pull on it hard and have it shatter in my hand, that would be a fun drive to the hospital( it would probably be faster than waiting for an ecnalubma since the junk yard is in the middle of BFE)

vstech 05-26-2008 01:17 AM

at least if you broke the glass, you would have been able to see your right side traffic during the drive to the emergency room...

I don't think there is a blind spot with these cars. It's like driving in a glass bubble compared to modern cars. I remember when the right side mirror was an option and most cars drove without them. Amazing how many cars have backup cameras and displays because the rearward vision is so poor.

True, when was the last time you saw a mini-van without dents in the back?
