My E300D is suddenly sluggish
Hi all.
I have a 1995 Mercedes E300 diesel, normally aspirated. On my way to work this morning, I floored the accelerator in an attempt to merge with some traffic, but at around 3500 rpm, it felt like a giant hand was holding my car back. It usually revs freely up to around 4500 rpm before shifting up. As the car becomes hotter, it barely wants to rev above 3000 rpm. I'm greatly concerned now, seeing as I've been running WVO for about a year now, on and off. Currently I'm running about 80% WVO to 20% diesel. Could it be fuel filters or something else? Thanks in advance, Bjoern |

look at air filters and change your fuel filters....most likely the cause..I had one do that.

What mileage do you have, how much on WVO and is it a single tank or dual tank heated system?

Thanks for the reply, TM. The car has clocked 140000 miles. I use a single tank, living in Florida, no need to heat the oil. I use a 4/1 ratio WVO/gasoline mixture with Diesel Fuel Supplement. Bjoern |

FYI - even D2 is heated by your engine before its injected and its much thinner viscosity than your cold WVO. How many mile on your WVO belnd??? 10 miles and developed a problem might mean its time to rethink your ratios.....if 140K would be different story.

Fuel filter, period.

Sometimes rises in ambient temperatures are neglected. This can effect power more than you would expect.
(ie.. the need for cold air intakes) - which do less during high temp season.. you are from southern Cali, no? |

I believe this model has the resonance flaps on the intake, does it not? I would first replace the fuel filters and if that did not clear up the problem I would check those flaps, they tend to cause similar symptoms.

Amen to this. Every three or four degrees over 80 or 85 F ambient seems to cost me a sizable quantity of horsepower/torque/whatever. My SDL will fly in the winter and on these hot summer days with the compressor on and everything, it gets just about anemic.

If one of the flaps were not functioning properly I believe he would have a CEL.

I know on my 96 e300d the flaps themselves did not create a CEL. I did get a Cel when the electrical connection to the crossover valve was disconnected. In my case, I had accidentally broken a wire to the crossover valve when removing the crossover pipe. As far as the flaps themselves were concerned, I manually moved the flaps back and forth with the engine running, and no error codes came up at all.

One quick test that I have noticed to check if the middle flap opens. The little snorkle pipe that leads from the airbox to the upper radiator slot opening, when removed, makes an audible noise while driving (just makes the engine louder) above 3,500 or so RPM's.....
Simple to to verify you can hear the valve opening. The engine develops a slightly deeper tone. |

95e300d was designed brilliantly without CEL.

Nope, he wouldnt. I diliberately disconnected mine, to see what they did. They're back on now. I found they simple gave a smoother perceived powerband. No lights under that hood either. Change the fuel pre ( which should be caked with black glob), and main fuel filter. Check the fuel lines for wetness, leaks carefully. I ran B50 ( sometimes 100, sometimes B30) on acverage for the first 12K I owned my biobuggy, and finally the delivery valve O rings went away on me. Again, check for leaks carefully when you change those filters, you'll get them sooner or later until you replace with Viton seals. ( I used OEM fuel lines) BTW, in engine internals were near spotless. Never know the enigine had 235K on it. This was carefully brewed biodiesel, not WVO. Great stuff. BTW, even in 90+ degree heat up here in WNY, my WVO friends still run heated WVO up to the IP. Its GOTTA be near 160 to work right. Bjoern, these w124 3.0L 6's make GREAT biobuggies, dont they?! I just logged 33mpg combined, with a lot of around town putt-puttin' and 3000 rpm highway time ( over 55mph). B100. Awesome stuff. Smells better too! |
