Question '84 190D 2.2, Tachometer

Folks,

I'm working on a new project, an '84 190D 2.2 5 Speed. This car has some interesting electrical problems, PO destroyed the dash attempting to install a bigger stereo. Luckily I also have an '85 190E 2.3 to rob parts from. I also have purchased a Tech Manual from e-Bay.....helpful but not an MB manual.

What drives the Tachometer on these cars????

I have pulled out the Instrument Cluster, and it does not appear to be a mechanical tach. If it's electrical there are several ways that I know of to drive a tach......Alternator......Flywheel Teeth......Pickup on Harmonic Balancer / Pulley......but I haven't a decent schematic that I can find a Tachometer pickup on.

I have asked this question over at "190 Revolution" a week or so ago and there hasn't been any reply.......I followed a DIY link from here and thought that there would be a bunch of specific knowledge over there......not a lot of technical knowledge in evidence........

Thanx,
SB

Does the A/c work on that car? Reason I ask is that when I blew a fuse (10?) once on that year 190D, I lost both my a/c and the tach. I think there is a relay for the a/c that receives input from the tach. Can't remember the reason for that but it made sense when I researched it. Sorry can't help much more. Wish I still had that car...

Cool Interesting possibility....

I don't know about the AC yet.....the center of the dash is in shambles....I was installing that section complete with AC controls (from the parts car) when the plug that the sliding fan control is attached to disintegrated.....I have the other one.....need to rebuild the pin connector and then try the AC.....the unit seems to have power......

from what you say, if I get the AC controls working then I've got a good chance of getting the Tach back......

Thanx
SB

Well, I don't know that it necessarily must work, but there is a common fuse for sure and that's what I would check first. I need to go over to the mbca website and review my posts regarding this problem. I think Marshall Booth set me straight on this because I was asking about OVP relays and such thinking that might be the problem but this year 190D didn't have the OVP, as far as I can remember now.

Electric tach.

The tach is driven by a sensor that mounts on the transmission bellhousing. You can trace the wire from near the bottom of the bellhousing up to the instrument cluster.

Cool Is the sensor the same......

Is the sensor the same for the "D" and "E".....I would assume so, but y'all know what happens when you assume.....

Klima relay compares speed sensor on a/c clutch with tachometer output. If there is a difference this is interpreted as a slipping belt and the a/c is shut off. Have you been able to check the fuses yet?

tach drive

this might help, on my 87 190d-the tach pickup is on the front side of bell housing, drivers side, one wire goes up to a connection on firewall, behind battery.(then i'm not sure, where else) but it's connected to the klima and over voltage relay(somehow). my tach was intermittent-I took the ovr apart & found a broken solder connection-had to use a magnifing glass- but when resoldered it works all the time........jerry

Exclamation Uh...Oh...

Will someone please post a photo of the area behind the cover, behind the battery on a 190D.......

The PO was in there as well......and I know that the "E" has to be different....

Also, is there a recommended Shop Manual for the W201's......

Thanx,
SB

Manuals

The only manuals worth having (in my opinion) are the factory MB manuals, either in print form (preferred) or on CD-ROM (less desirable). Be warned, however, that the manuals for the engine, chassis, electrical troubleshooting with diagrams, and climate controls are all separate manuals.

Keep your eyes open on Ebay for the manuals. I believe that the electrical manual is no longer in print, and not available from MB.

They are very complete and comprehensive. They are also expensive, but worthwhile if you are getting deep into a project.

Thumbs up I was hoping to find.....

I have the MB W123 Service Manual CD....it's fine by me......was hoping to find something similar for the W201......

The manual that I got is from "Autorepairinfo" on e-Bay.....it's better than the Chilton's that I also have for that time period....so it is as they describe.....but leaves me wanting the factory books......

What is the manual on CD that Performance Products sells, like??

If I chase down and eventually manage to win a set of MB W201 Service Manuals......it will cost more than my parts car did.......

At the moment I need the W201 electrical manual badly.......

I have a copy of the little Gray MB book "Technical Data, Passenger Cars" April '85 Edition......and it has helped tremendously so far, all sorts of good data in there......covers all models in production at that time, and all different 'National" versions........

I also have the print copy of the W123 AC Manual and "The Technical Companion"

all good books.....just doing this li'l Diesel car on the cheap.......may eventually purchase a set of books as needed......
