1987 300SDL Primary Fuel Filter

Where is the primary fuel filter supposed to be located on the 1987 300SDL?

I can see the secondary, it sorta looks like a small oil filter at the front/top of the engine.

"There is a filter in your gas tank"

So, lets see... I drop the deisel tank ('cause there ain't no gas tank), then use a sawzall to cut open the tank to find the filter ................ change the filter ..... and weld the tank back together ..... then re-install the tank...correct?

NO NO NO NO unless you want to buy another tank...

Your remove the tank or you buy the 46mm SOCKET to remove the screen inside the tank. In absence of the sockert you can use a large pipe wrench to remove the filter. the screen is threaded into the tank.

tank is removed through the trunk by removing some bolts and disconnectiing the fuel lines and electrical connections. It is held in by some adhesive so you will have to pull on it to get it loose.

Fuel filter near the turbo???

300SDL???

Mine has 3 places where fuel is cleaned.

1st. Strainer in the bottom of the tank.
2nd. In-Line plastic filter with a cardboard filter insert thingie you can see through the plastic, located on the opposite side of the engine from the turbo. Pretty close to the IP actually, it's directly in line with the fuel line coming from the tank.
3rd. The "oil filter" spin-on filter at the front of the engine just forward of the power steering reservoir.

Just checked my engine compartment 2 insert plastic filters, one by the turbo and by the pump The spin on filter and the inline in the tank.

YUP, I found a plastic, in-line filter just in front of the turbo assembly, on the passenger side of the engine. The fuel line then crosses the front of the engine, over the top of the radiator, then goes into the screw-on cannister filter.

I never noticed the in-line before. In the parts books, its called the "Primary fuel filter". The cannister is called the "secondary fuel filter".

I ordered these two filters and will pick them up in the morning. I'll also get some injector cleaner.

The engine has been stalling occasionally when coasting to a stop. I changed the air cleaner and that seemed to help, but it ain't right yet.

All left-right directions are provided as sitting in the drivers seat of an American car.

My turbo is on the "right" side of the car. My fuel system is on the "left" side of the car. I don't have diesel on the other side of the crossover pipe at any point. How is there fuel getting over there?

My fuel comes from the tank INTO the engine compartment on the "left" side as well. There is literally no diesel on the passenger side of the car except the tank.

Tell me more about the 46mm Socket to remove the screen inside the tank, without removing the tank. Thanks!

Look agian, its buried a little but its there

here is the socker im talkin about.

http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm

its M0035a

Ive compared the diesel and gas inlet filters and they are same size. Even though the description says gas tank.

I think craftsmen or snap sells a 46 mm socket but I dk it will fit. I've always used a pipe wrench to remove the inlet filter.

There are in-line filters in the vacuum lines between the vacuum pump and the EGR and ARV amplifiers behind the passenger side headlight. They should be dry. The line is much smaller than fuel supply and return line.

As bustedbenz said the fuel supply and return lines run along the driver side frame and come up inboard of the driver side front wheel. Why the supply fitting is above the passenger side axle and the exhaust pipe crosses over to the driver side is beyond me.

Agreed, when we removed my EGR and all the lines associated with it, we removed vacuum lines with filters on them. Definitely no petroleum in the lines...

I looked under the spare, can't see anything related to a fuel tank.
