need help making up my mind
I dont know where to start but i need a new good car that would last me another 20 years with a decent mpg and a wvo conversion option in the future
1 : 1987 300e turbo diesel 189k miles grey/grey every thing works except the trip meter ( odometer rolls fine i drove it for a couple of miles ) older man owned it died now his wife selling it one owner car she said was never serviced out of westchester pa benz dealer up to date on all records but she does not have the paper to proof it ( clean autocheck ) 2 : 1997 300e diesel 118k miles blue/beige everything works two rear end hits one on each side ( showing on autocheck ) this is sold at a local dealer and they have no records at all either but the car tells how well kept it was too first car is 4000 second one is 7900 thats the prices i can pay after all talk and low balling already both cars drive well other than they are pretty slow and slugish ( i guess this is how diesel benz is ) the wife wants me to get the new one since she likes it the older one is my first choice but i am not sure if its too old and too high miles to buy HELP haha |

Neither vehicle is a bad choice. Both appear to be in good condition and cared for. I like the idea of records for the '87.
The '87 is considerably faster than the '97 because of the turbo. The '87 probably has some issues if you found it to be "slow" because it's the fastest diesel every produced by M/B up until the most recent crop of CDI's. Going against the wishes of the wife is never wise...........especially true if it's going to be her vehicle. Neither engine is a good candidate for WVO conversions...........both of them can be primadonnas at times on regular old diesel fuel. |

If you've driven both, which do you prefer?
How much of a DIYer are you? Auctions end tomorrow means there's little chance to have a PPI but maybe you can negotiate an escape clause in your bid. Will the dealer accept the widow's authorization for you to review the service history? Older engine is easier to convert to run on WVO (please say you're planning a proper two tank and heated system) and fix if/when WVO problems arise. Sixto 87 300D |

The '87 that I've driven was downright sporty--not sluggish at all. I'd suspect the turbo isn't engaging on the one you're looking at (albeit, just a guess). The '87 is easier to work on, but age takes it toll in ways that have nothing to do with mileage or care. If these cars are in as good of condition as claimed, then the prices are quite reasonable. Oh wait, who am I kidding, go with the one your wife likes!

if you want a diesel
I'm hoping the 87 is a 300D; not a 300e diesel like you posted........IF I remember correctly.
If your wife needs a new car....just buy them both. Does the 87 have a #14 head or a newer casting?

The 2.5 is not better. It is the same engine as the '87 3.0 with one less cylinder.
The early 2.5 and 3.0 suffered from a fragile cylinder head casting, which apparently do not endure overheating without damage.

The 2.5 is a few years newer and slightly more refined. They have their nuances but it's difficult to pass up a 4-5 mpg advantage.

Not a lot of need. I can see the metallic paint, leather was available and is uncommon, heated seats ditto, and rear reading lamps extremely rare, that's about it for options on the US market '87 300D.

Memory driver seat was an option.
ASR was an option on 2.5s. Sixto 87 300D |

Maybe it felt slow beacause I drove my 02 cummins 2500 down there which is pushing about 850 ft/lbs
it only got power mirror on the passenger side not both sides which is odd
