Is this a factory setup - '85 or '86 300SD?

Maybe this should be in a craigslist thread, but I've never seen a 617 with a turbo/intake setup like this. Is this factory?

http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/5177/dsc02666ht5.jpg

The build plate says 08/85, so I suppose it could be called an '86 300SD, but it still has the pre '86 bumpers and trim. Tail end of the build, I guess.

Look at the turbo, and someone with better turbo vision than me please identify it. Did Mercedes add some kind of a boost limiter/blow off valve on this engine?

My favorite color. If you do not need inspections, then you can convert it to federal fairly easily

Yep, stock.....but a $55 filter instead of $15. Then again, over the life of the car you probably balance it out since that air cleaner can't wreck a gazillion air cleaner mounts and brackets.

The device at 11 o'clock to the EGR valve canister is the air recirculation valve (ARV) which all trap oxidizer equiped MBs have. As directed by the ECU, the ARV routes some air from the compressor outlet to the compressor inlet softening the onset of boost. This somehow gets and keep the trap oxidizer at a desired operating temperature.

IMO the bigger issue with California 85s is the device that replaced the trap oxidizer. I don't know what it looks like or where it's attached.

My '85 300D-T (W123) has an identical engine. Sixto, what did you mean about "the device that replaced the trap oxidizer?"

I meant I don't know what I'm talking about Doesn't the 85 California 617 have a trap oxider somewhere that was replaced by a different kind of catalyst?

Ya, they got replaced by a regular diesel ox cat, like the one my TDI has or the one my ECOdiesel had. They are not problematic.

Correct. The original "trap oxidizer" was replaced every 30,000 miles by dealers at no charge to the owner. In the early 1990s, Mercedes came up with a permanent replacement, the "trap catalyst." It was, AFAIK, the same size and was installed in the same location as the trap oxidizer. This location is below and slightly to the rear of the turbo. It accepts exhaust from the manifold at the rear of the engine and delivers it to the turbo, which sits more forward than the Federal turbo. The turbo also sits higher, leaving no room for the air filter, which therefore has to go in the corner of the engine compartment, all the way forward on the passenger side. Since the air filter is unique to this version, it is pricey, but the air filter casing is more rugged than the federal version and does not rattle apart. The California version also has a different crankcase ventilation system and does not have an oil drain from the air cleaner to the oil pan; the crankcase fumes are sucked directly into the turbo intake.

A production date of 8/85 makes it one of the last 1985 300SDs ever made. No SDs were made for the 1986 model year.

Yeah, I saw this ad like a month ago. I thought real hard about going to see it and getting it. But never made it out there. A bit lower on the price and I'd probably been there already.

I have one of those air filter setups coming from a fellow forum member. $55 is a small price to pay for having one of the best filter systems Mercedes ever designed.

Its really a shame they only used it that one year. The 86-87 300D/SDL filters are the next best but they won't fit in a W123 engine bay.

To me that doesn`t seem like all that bad of price for that low of milage.

The guy only shows the L/R seat twice and not the front seats. maybe a reason?

Good oil pressure , but then most show this when the engine isn`t at full operating temp. good selling point to the uninformed.

There is a little ding on the L/F hood corner.

Love the color combination.

I suppose the front oil pan could be dropped, and a hole drilled for a oil drain since the 85 upper pan is not drilled for this on the calif. model.
I`ll have to look at my 85 to see if that is doable.

Wish I had told Metric Motors when I purchased my new engine, it was for a 83 in stead of 85 .

Not all that big of deal to change to Federal set up. Just have to scour the PNP for parts. good time to find a set of pre EGR manifolds, like from a 78 W116 300SD.
