Oil Cooler Hoses

I need to know if I have to remove any parts in order to replace the upper and lower oil cooler hoses on my 300D-T.

Is this a difficult job due to the radiator connections being aluminum and fragile? Is it easy to disconnect the hoses from both the oil cooler and the oil filter housing?

Also, do I use a sealer on the threads to prevent leakage?

Thanks

I've never done it but I hear its really tricky to route the new hoses in. And you have to put one in first or else the other will not go.. a real nightmare. Im sure someone else will enlighten you.

I have routed the hoses in place, but with the engine on the engine stand not in the frame. As far as disconnecting them from radiator and oil filter housing, that should be no problem. I think the only trick might be puzzling the hoses in and out. I exect that it will be a little frustrating, but not undoable.

Good luck,

I replaced mine a couple of years ago and it's not too hard. The fittings on mine came off fairly easily and I used some plumber's teflon tape when I reattached them (probably didn't need to but I figured couldn't hurt as long as I didn't block the line), be sure not to over tighten! Getting the new lines in is a bit of a rubex cube but as I recall not as hard as it looks. The trick is to pay attention to how they come out! I don't really remember but I vaguely recall one of them may need to be put in from below. The job can't be too hard because I don't have any nightmare memories of doing it. Then again, I'm used to working on English cars.....

I'm not trying to be contrary, but I recommend that you DO NOT use Teflon tape. These are flared fittings, so the flare does the sealing not the threads, teflon tape is for sealing pipe threads.

More importantly, I saw a small piece of Teflon tape cause oiling system problems on a non MB engine one time, so I hesitate to use it around the oiling system. If you do, be very careful not to allow any to overlap threads such that a piece can make it into the oiling system.

Good luck,

Larry,

Good point. I was very careful to use only one wrap and didn't wrap it all the way to the end of the fitting for exactly that reason. The only reason I used it at all was so I could afford to be a bit more reserved in my tightening torque. You're probably right though, when in doubt, avoid it.

When I worked offshore, we used copious amounts of teflon tape on everything EXCEPT JVC fittings. That's the type of fitting the oil lines have, I believe. Like Larry said, it's the flare and the bevel of the fitting that seal.

I have replaced the hose that connects at the lower end of the cooler because of seepage at the metal to hose interconnection point. I worked it in from underneath pushing it toward the front of the car and did not have to remove anything but the hose and clamps that hold the hose. I would avoid teflon tape AT ALL COST - not only for the reason as previously stated but because I have seen too much used and the housing that was getting screwed into crack. I have never seen it used on a car though.

Had my coller replace by a Benz dealer and they overe torque the threads. 50 miles later they replace the coller again because of stripped threads. Be careful not cross thread or over torque
