1976 300D - Just a "few" questions

I found this car in NE Georgia 3 years ago. I purchased it for $1700 and was told by the seller that he was the 3rd owner and the miles are original; at 76k!!!
The car allegedly was purchased new at an Atlanta dealership by an older gentlemen who passed away after driving it locally for roughly 12 years. It then sat in a family member's partially coverd shed for well over the next decade. The paint has oxidized and I have replaced all belts and hoses since purchasing it and it has been a daily driver since. I have since done a lot of work to it myself as well as with a couple of other local MBZ diesel enthusiasts. It has it's quirks but I have so much fun with the car (I have since sold my 82 300D & 79 300 CD). It's never been wrecked and body is straight as an arrow.

Here are my questions...

1. Is there a way to determine exactly how many miles are on the car? Right now it's just over 82k.

2. I would love to find exactly all of the accessories the car could have came with and/or was available. Was there luggage for the car? Gas cans? Tool Kit? Emergency triangle? Etc.

3. It has a dash cover that is now brittle but it perfectly matched the interior of the car (navy blue) and I would like to find another OR another dash. Could you recommend any good resources other than Ebay or Pull A Part?

That's it for now. Thanks for all of your help.

As to the dash, a nice one is something pleasing to look over while driving down the road, a buggered up one is not fun to look at First choice would be one from a "parts" car, They can be dyed to match your blue, the black ones in the 123s are more common and seem to hold up better than the blue ones. Not sure about the 115 however, "Coverlay" (sp?) make plastic covers that most "untrained" eyes wont pick up on,
then theres the "rug" look to cover the cracks. Sounds like a nice car at a way nice price, have fun

1. Nope, not with out any service records.

2. the w115's didn't get a triangle, or a first aid kit. They all had a set of tools and a jack. I think there was luggage but it had to be ordered.

3. Buy a carpet cover or a new dash cap that is made of ABS plastic. I have on of those covers on my W123 and it loks fine. The dash in my 1976 300D only has one crack in it.

Post some pictures of your car, we'd love to see it.

Sometimes the dealers records any mercedes dealer can call up might be revealing. Especially if the car was taken to mercedes for service once in awhile. They would tend to indicate the recorded milage at the time of services purchased.

With three owners it always becomes uncertain. Plus the general unreliability of the odometer and ease of manipulation. The other relavent issue is that whatever the true accumulated miles really are the car is yours.

For a good solid used blue dash I would advertise on this sites parts wanted area. Usually dash pads in the very northern states or Canada fair far better over the years. Someone on our site may know where there is one.

Stewart, interesting enough, my 1974 240D came with a First Aid Kit. The car did come through the European delivery program and that might have had something to do with it.

andersbenz,
Sounds pretty interesting. Where does the first aid fit in your car?

First Aid Kit

Oh, boy. You guys are going to me think, eh.

I sold the car ten years ago but, if memory serves me correctly, It was a black plastic box with green writing that fit into a vertical box holder mounted on the left side of the front passenger's foot well.

First Aid Kit

Here's the original first aid kit location & contents (not my car; this was from one sold on eBay some time ago). Finding one of these is going to be very hard, but for display's sake, you could fairly easily duplicate one.

I don't know if the /8 series came with the wrench kit & emergency fan belt; I have pictures of those too but can't remember if those were from a W123. The tools were (besides the jack & lug nut wrench for tire changes, which my car still has) a pair of pliers, a Phillips & standard screwdriver (one handle, two sets of reversible shafts), double-ended wrenches: 17/19mm, 17/14mm, 13/11mm and 10/8mm.

hmm, I have never seen that before. On the 300D's that wouldn't work because the speaker would be in the way. Wonder where it was placed in the 300D's?

First Aid Kit Box

I would imagine that it would be located on the back deck between the two speakers like the older model 300Ds.

the Oxidized Paint

I would buff out that paint job. MBZ original paint is amazing . . . it can be buffed out and look brand new after sitting in the sun for 30 years, and does not fade, . . . . ever, which is why I would do whatever possible to preserve what is there, and pay to have MBZ paint used on bodywork, if small. Unfortunately, the one I bought had been damaged before by roof tiles in a storm, and repainted with clearcoat, which was peeling like a bad sunburn when I picked it up. Unfortunately, I didn't have $6-$9K to invest in a true MBZ paint job, but had a fair decent acrylic enamel (they slipped metalic by me) put on the car. Actually looks nice. Five years later is ready for its first buffing, but it holding up well with regular wash and wax. So, you should be able to buff out your paint job, and the exposed part will match the part that was covered by partial shed without any problems.

Dash Pad

Try J.C. Whitney . . . they have dash pads listed for MBZ, and if they can't get one off the shelf for you, they will give you the company's name to order from them (for when it's not listed in the Whitney Catalog). I got one for my first Benz, reasonably and had a choice of the different types. Let me know how it works out for you.

Also . . . got any pics of the car? Would love to see it.

Torie
