Grinding into Reverse!

Help! My 240D grinds loudly when I try to shift into Reverse. Yes, I am holding the clutch down. Car's had this problem ever since I bought it, but it's gotten progressively worse to the point it makes me cringe to put it in Reverse. Shifting into any of the forward gears feels fine, mo grinding or anything.

edit: it appears that if I put a little throttle in before shifting, it lessens the amount of grinding going into Reverse. Once I'm in reverse, if I keep the clutch down, I can shift in and out of Reverse w/o any grinding.

Try putting the transmission in a forward gear first, then go to reverse. the forward gears have synchronizers to align the gears so they don`t grind when shifting. by doing this, it will stop the gears from turning, then going into reverse it should be smooth.

mine will grind also if I just slam it gear w/o waiting a second or two.

reverse does not have synchro`s.

If the fingers (springs) on the pressure plate get weak, then the clutch won`t fully disingage and can cause problem getting into gear.

Thanks Charlie. It grinds a LOT less than usual with your suggestion. Still trying to troubleshoot. If the springs are weak, wouldn't that cause the same non-full disengaging problem going into the forward gears?

Worthy of mention is that my clutch take-up seems to have changed location lately- it is now close to the point of the clutch being pushed all the way in. Another point to mention is this is my first stick shift car. Am thinking new clutch, but not sure!

What would your advice be to do/course of troubleshooting?

WAIT a minute-- I think the Springs issue is spot on. It is hard to move the shifter through the gates to my other gears, and a tiny grind sometimes occurs. I think it's new clutch time.

Make sure your clutch hydraulics are up to the job as well.

Try pumping the clutch a few times before putting it into reverse. If that stops the grinding, there's a problem in the clutch hydraulics.

Pumping the clutch prior to shifting has no difference on any of the gears. Exact same as before.

What about holding the clutch for 5-10 full, by-the-watch seconds before attempting to move into R?

Clutch tool

Here is the tool you need to check the clutch lining for wear.

http://www.startekinfo.de/etools/content/tool.jsp?toolno=115%20589%2007%2023%2000

this thread shows where to place the tool in the cut out in the black gasket.
It fits between the slave cylinder and the transmission.

Just wondering if you know anything about its prior history regarding the clutch?? If the clutch had been replaced in the past, and if the lay-shaft coming out of the transmission was not exactly centered in the flywheel, there is the possibility that even with the clutch depressed, the transmission gears would still be turning. This would not be too much of a problem with gears with syncros, but would create an issue with reverse gear.

Iono. I believe the P.O. had it replaced.

I just had my mechanic diagnose the issue (zip! flamesuit on). He works a lot on these cars. He says the clutch is indeed out; needs new Pressure Plate, Clutch Disc, and Clutch Pilot Bearing, and Flywheel. Guess who's gonna learn how to change a Clutch.. yep...

Anyone know where to get a flywheel for less than $400? Is Expensive!! Other suggestions?
