When to do timing chain & my engine version?

Hi,

My car has just clicked over 150,000 kms today. The chain has never been replaced and I can't find anything in the book to suggest when I should do it.

I just went through my receipts to double ckeck but there is no mention of timing chain. Is it overdue or something that should be checked?

Also, I know I should know this but can someone please confirm my engine version as to whether I have M603 or M606? Is it on a data plate somewhere?

Incase my signature hasn't updated yet: 1994 E300 Diesel (straight six no turbo)

Thanks

Check the stretch and you have a M606.

Thanks, Whats the best way to check for stretch?

I was 99% sure it was an M606 but thanks for confirming.

Take valve cover off and line up timing marks, turn motor to the right when you are standing in front of car looking at the motor. Look at the crankshaft pully you should see some numbers and there is a pointer right on top of the numbers, when you have the timing marks lined up read what number the pointer is pointing to.

your car must be an early 95... like 9 or 10/94 right? I think the 95 series was the first to get the 6cyl, 24 valve motor. if so, the headlights should be rounder than your 93 was. at 150K I doubt you have much to worry about on that motor, unless it was maintained by mcscrooge!
someone on here should pipe up with the exact method to check the stretch, but the above method should get you pretty close.

I'm guessing 150,000 kms means it isn't a US spec car.

Yes, It's 11/93 - I rounded it to 94 but it was built 11/93. It had the facelift with clear signals at the front and front grille for the cold air intake and of course 24 valve.

Rule of thumb is to change the timing chain before it breaks, on any make/model of car!

Consult the crystal ball gauge on the dash as to when that exactly is for your car.

did the 606 have the same issue with the timing gears that the 602 had? I doubt it, but it's worth inspecting. look at the thickness of the points on the cam timing gears. there is a spec on here about them but basically they should have good thick flats on each tooth, not sharp points. and the base of the teeth should fit snugly on each chain link, not have space for or aft of the links!
