I don't know what happened, I assume it just wore out; the oil pressure and temperature were both normal. Maybe I will look into taking a train, that might be more enjoyable than flying or driving my rented Toyota.

Craig, sorry to hear about your lack of forward motion so far from home. I remember your last search for and engine. you did pretty well on your original one.

I think Metric builds engines as requested. I have been there a couple of times, they have quite an inventory of blocks, heads, cranks and every concieveable part you can think of.
I don`t remember the time line when I ordered mine, until mike called and said it was ready. I know it was better than a week.

I don`t think most shops have an engine waiting to go.

What do you get with the Adsitco engine? just a bare long block?
With metric, it comes with Glow Plugs, Injectors and Injection Pump rebuilt.

At least you were close to civilation, when I had the funny noises coming from under the hood, we were 40 miles of winnemucca, Nevada. which is 180 miles east of Reno. It was us, the Jack Rabbits, the truckers flying by on I-80 and one old rusty Box Car sitting on a siding out in the Sage Brush.

Interestingly, Amtrak has a stop at Winnemucca too.

Anyone taking Amtrak has either got a lot of time on their hands, money - or both to lose...... When on-the-road working or otherwise, Amtrak would be my last choice in getting home.....

With the right roadside service, it matters not where you are. You'll be towed to the repair station of your choice. It makes no difference what you are driving or where you are.

Unfortunately, only subscribers of that specialized contract service company can get that level of unlimited uses and pre-paid service. - And it's not AAA.

I've been looking into amtrak a little, it looks like I can get a ticket from Cleveland to Denver (with a sleeper car from Chicago to Denver) for about the price of a flight. The only inconvenience is that I have to return my rental car in Cleveland by about 6PM and the train leaves at about 3AM from a station in the middle of downtown. Other than hanging out at a train station for half the night (which isn't going to happen), I would have to grab a hotel in the evening and check out very early to get a cab or limo to the train station. That's not a big deal, but it will require a little planning. I might give the train a try, it can't possibly suck as much as flying.

I like the train and I would do it. A lot of people don't. A fair proportion of Amtrak's stations are in bad locations and they are often not on time, but I actually prefer it to flying.

It includes the long block, IP, vacuum pump, and injectors. I'm not sure about the GPs, but that's not a big deal. It does not include the manifolds or turbo, but AFAIK my turbo is fine. I've asked them to take a close look at everything they are going to transfer and let me know if they see anything that should be replaced. I think my other accessories are in good shape. I'll have them replace the water pump, I think my fan clutch is good.

I'll probably do it if I can figure out the logistics in Cleveland, it's probably just a matter of finding a reasonably priced hotel scheduling a cab in the middle of the night. It also requires a 4 hour layover in Chicago, but that's not a problem either. It's actually a little quicker than driving and I should be able to get some work done.

Very few cars can survive the miles you drive for very long. If it were a PT cruiser you'd have to get a whole new car every 6-7 months.

I would probably need a new body every few months too.

So very true, I am 24 and can barely stand to drive one more than 15-20 mins tops. Thankfully I now work at a different location and just get paid to use my own car, so much nicer!

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a $7-8k Benz from Ebay and keep yours for parts? Unless of course, you're in love with the current one and it's as pristine as you'd get from ebay for that kind of money...?

Forget ebay. And, even though you know your car better than any other, have you considered getting a car from this place, http://www.mercedesmotoring.com/cars-for-sale/ ?

Uh, you would be buying someone's hidden problems with questionable history.

The funds are better spent on a new long block as chosen due to the fact his time is more valuable. This is far more apparent the older you become.
