Broke an engine last weekend.

I managed to lose a bearing in my 300D while driving through Cleveland last Sunday. Fortunately, I was close to civilization so I was able to find a hotel, a dealer, and a rental car without much effort. I didn't have much time to mess with it because I needed to get to NY Monday.

Long story short, I ordered a reman engine and am having it shipped to the dealer to install. It won't be done before I need to head back home, so I'll need to fly back and pick up the car when it's done. It was a used engine that I put about 150k miles on, I assume the total miles were over 300k; maybe more. I'm done playing around with used engines, I really don't have time for this. Not a big deal, but it did cost me a couple of hours last week.

Sorry to hear about that mishap - tough break. Best of luck dealing with it.

Probably about $7-8k, plus rental cars, airfare, etc. I actually ended up getting one from adsit; neither adsit nor metric had one in stock so they both will need a couple of weeks. The bottom line was that adsit was about $2k cheaper and 1500 miles closer. The dealer has a history with adsit, and they are willing to let me buy it directly without them taking markup. I'm a little nervous about adsit, but I can't justify the extra cost, shipping, and time involved in going to metric. We'll see how it works out, at least the tech at the dealer seems to know his stuff.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a $7-8k Benz from Ebay and keep yours for parts? Unless of course, you're in love with the current one and it's as pristine as you'd get from ebay for that kind of money...?

Uh, you would be buying someone's hidden problems with questionable history.

The funds are better spent on a new long block as chosen due to the fact his time is more valuable. This is far more apparent the older you become.

Time doesn't seem to be very valuable to someone spending at least 4 days out of a week driving a car to and from New York state every week or so from Colorado. It doesn't seem to make much sense looking at time lost, especially when adding in vehicle maintenance, fuel costs, (4) days of restaurant meals and lodging. Time IS money - but some don't look at their time as being a valuable commodity. It may be more like a hobby of sorts, and if that's the case, then time means nothing. But there's no escaping the negative expense of that particular kind of travel, versus air travel.

As a self-employed person, my first consideration is time. Everything else comes after that. I've learned a thing or two on the road in 37 years. And time is at the top of the list.

Sure, it would also be easier to go buy a brand new one, but that's not what I want. As it is, I can fix this one for about 15% the cost of a new car. Mine's in pretty good cosmetic condition (I've been planning on having it repainted when I have time because the paint is getting thin), and I know the status of just about every moving part on the car. I'm not really interested in replacing the car and starting the whole process over from scratch.

I didn't see in mentioned but, was an official MB re-manufactured/replacement 617 engine from the fatherland not available or was it decided against because of cost/time or other reasons?

I know someone who a couple years ago stole i.e. found and bought a complete MB replacement engine for $2000 was still mounted on a steel stand in a wooden crate with all the paperwork from MB the way it came over on the ship, the only things it needed where the alternator, compressor, power steering pump, and fan. It came with the turbo, air cleaner and everything, I went with him and picked it up in this giant, old, poorly lit warehouse, when we pried the top of the crate off everything was covered with corrosion retarding vapor paper. We pulled that off and all the cadmium-nickelbb plated lines, clamps, brackets, nuts and bolts looked like gold, we joked that it was like finding a pirates treasure chest!

Got it back to the ranch and removed the rest of the crate and it sat around like that on it’s stand being admired for a couple weeks before installing it, it was almost too pretty to put in the engine compartment!

Actually, this dealer told me that MB still lists the motor for $11K, but I didn't check to see if it was still really available. It may be listed but not really available.
