swap secondary filter, now no start

82 300sd, running on diesel. adjusted the valves a couple of weeks ago. replaced the primary filter a week ago that was visibly dirty. a few days ago, i replaced the secondary filter and OMG i forgot to fill it up with fuel. the car has not started since.

i've been cranking this thing over so much it started to melt the plastic around the battery terminals.

i've tried loosening the lines at the injectors and cranked the motor and no visible fuel leaking at the injectors.

i tried a quick spray of starter fluid, and cranking the motor for a couple of seconds. it sounded like gravel in a coffee can.

what should i try next? it seems like there is no fuel to the injectors.

t.i.a.

Did you loosen the nut on the top of the secondary and pump the primer?

Have you pumped the hand primer pump about 50 times yet?

Pump the primer 100 times or until you hear the fuel passing thru the bypass valve. Alternately, removing the secondary filter and fill it with a burnable liquid--ATF, Diesel, Purge, Vegetable oil.

i had already pulled the secondary back off, and filled it with seafoam, and pumped the primer about a dozen times. oh, and i replaced the primer pump several months back so i know it's working. where's the bypass valve that i should be listening to ever so closely? i'll pump the primer a bunch bunch and see what i can hear!

It's located where the return line attaches to the IP.

Pump that primer pump LOTS! When I changed out my spin-on filter I filled it with diesel, AND pumped the primer pump 100 times for good measure (it builds character!). You may also need to replace your primer pump if doesn't seem to be pushing fuel through the system (if your fuel tank is low enough ask a friend to listen back at the fuel fill pipe after removing the filler cap - you should hear the excess diesel sloshing out of the return pipe and falling into the tank).

Also, I believe that you'll hear a 'squirt' noise from the bypass valve (as opposed to the sound of the primer pump).

Once you've got fuel in the low pressure side of the system, then you're still gonna have to do the cranking with the fuel injector lines cracked thing to get the air out of the high pressure side of things before it will start.

ok, i pumped the primer pump 100+ times and all of a sudden, i hear the bypass valve. it sounds like a small hand air pump with a needle on it for pumping up footballs, basketballs, etc.. pssht. i pumped it probably 50 times more for good measure. then i cracked the lines at the injectors and cranked the motor for about 5-10 seconds. then i tightened up the injector lines and she fired up on the first crank. she runs pretty danged smooth now. not bad for a motor that has 238k miles listed on the odo that's broken.

you folks were so helpful, and i was so happy to get the car going that i tried to pay it forward today. i went to put diesel in the car, and had to pull in with the front of my car facing the car that was already filling up. well, some douchebag college boy in a bro truck (jacked up with IFS, lol) pulled up behind the car i was facing and signals to me that i need to get in line behind him since that's the direction of traffic. lol. my filler tube is on the other side. DUH!

so, since the car pulls forward to exit, brotruck cuts me off. so i wait. when i'm finally filling up, the pump is running super slow. i put it on automatic, and walk behind the newer vw something that was waiting behind me. yep, a tdi. so what do i do? i had prepaid for my fuel inside, so i stopped the pump early and told the dudes in the tdi that i left a couple of bucks on the pump since they had to wait for me to pump. they were stoked.
