Great info. Many thanks folks. Tomorrow my beloved 300D will probably sacrifice its engine so its partner (my 300SD) can live again. The 300D has a bit of rust and a couple of transmission issues and the SD engine finally gave up the ghost at some high unknown milage - odometer broke at 310K a long time ago. These articles have greatly boosted my confidence that I can, indeed, do this.

Weee-eeel... maybe I can't read, but I don't see a step that I assume is necessary: disconnect shifter linkages!

Army, thanks SO much for this write-up - it has been tremendously helpful to me while attempting to pull an engine from my 300D. You are A+ (I mean it!).

Did I miss that step in the text? Silly - I remember going back to take a picture of the speedo cable. This was one of the first write ups I made all those many moons ago - my excuse is that I (like the car) was a little rusty!

I'm at this point now and just a little confused because I can't find that M8 adjusting bolt. Where exactly is it?

I'll ask a couple of questions to try to narrow down my search:

1) Do you define the end of the gearbox casing as the tailshaft or the bellhousing? If you define it as the tailshaft (that's why it's called the tailshaft, right?), then this is either one looooooooong bolt or you meant to say transmission mount . Is this correct? In that case, I'm set to go. If that's not the case...

2) ...then where on earth is it? I can only find two engine mounts -- sitting side-by-side -- so I don't know what the rear mount is...

Clarification

The tail end of the transmission has the transmission mount which is also often called the rear engine mount.

If you look in chap 00-212 in the FSM there's a load of information about it.

Here's a picture of the bit I mean

The bolt goes through the mount where the arrow is shown in the picture above

Interesting info on the mount. The turbodiesel 300's use this type (similar to "B" above)

Heh heh - I had a sneaky feeling the turbo wouldn't have it. I can't see how it has any benefit on the system anyway. The middle bit is pretty floppy - may be it is an extreme flex safety stop? (That should never happen in normal use)
