Question Excessive knocking when cold

It just started this morning, it sounds like there was a metallic piece rattling in the engine, a bit of excessive pinging and knocking there... but it was gone when I got to work and the engine was warm. What could cause this?

You have just experienced injector nailing. It's caused by worn or gummed injectors injecting fuel to soon. It can sometimes be solved with a can or two of diesel purge. But often the injectors need to be removed and atleast reshimed to bring the pop pressure back up, or the nozzles need to be replaced.

Hm... I'll try the diesel purge first... too cold out there to be performing surgery on the engine right now. Thanks!

DP will work for a short while but if it's time for an injector service, they'll be back to nailing as soon as all the DP is all flushed out. Try to avoid overdoing it though, it's high in solvents and not gentle on the hoses and other rubber like delivery valve seals.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks Speaking of which, it's time to change my injector braided hoses... 2 of them are leaking and I don't think the solvents are going to do them any good.

I'd run the diesel purge. Then change your filters and hoses. That way and deleterious effects of the diesel purge on hoses will not affect the new hoses.

DP can work to revive injectors in the case of an engine that has sat for a good while and injectors have gotten gummed up, or with an build-up in the injectors. But if the injectors are indeed tired then no amount of DP will help them.

Similar experience with my other 300SDL

The knocking sound was loud and I thought something was loose inside the cylinder. I did not do a diesel purge. I soaked all the injectors in Marvel Mystery Oil for 2+ weeks and the problem went away. That was all I did and now the engine runs well. I did about 400 miles so far with no noise at startup.
